Vincent should've known he was screwed the second Ruth Rhodes walked through the door that day.

The second the class laughed, the second she pursed her lips and looked at the sky and he thought God, she's stunning, he should've taken it as a reason to stay away.

He should've.

After all, Ruth Rhodes was weird, and ineffable, and she always wore clothes one size too big, and she only had one dimple, and she laughed that horrible, beautiful laugh, and drank water obnoxiously loudly, and had a thin ring of lip balm around her lips which he wanted to kiss right off, and he wanted to hold her every time he set his eyes on her.

He wished she would be his forever, so maybe the word forever would have a new meaning; maybe even when the trees wilted, and the snow melted into the earth, and the seasons flipped by, she'd still be there, with her hair tied back lowly and her singular-dimpled smile on her face, and she'd tell him everything was going to be okay.

Maybe if she was his forever, forever wouldn't come to an end the way it always did, the way the stories never talked about.

All forevers had ends.

Maybe that was true with Ruth.

Maybe their relationship had had an expiration date slapped onto it and no one had noticed.

It never should've happened.

He meant it when he told Ruth, it never should've happened. It was a mistake, it was foolish and Vincent knew it, he knew he was in deep.

And he was going insane without her.

Not that he was actually going to do something about it.

Not when he remembered the feeling he'd felt when Charlotte told him he still loved her.

No, he didn't want to burden her with his feelings. In a way, he was broken too, after all.

Vincent tapped his thigh thrice.

There wasn't anything he wanted more than to be with her.

Except to see her happy. To see her free.

So Vincent let his heart break the second time for Ruth Rhodes as he decided to let her go.
