Skyler

San Diego, 2594

"...and that is class, get out of here kids." Skyler's physics-and-technology teacher released her college credit class. Skyler was anxious to get to her last class so she could leave her school forever. Unlike most 17 year olds, Skyler actually liked school. But she liked the idea of the new life better. Besides, she knew enough about tech, the world, and she would never really use math in real life. After one long, boring history lecture about the use of fossil fuels and what it did to the environment back in the late 21st century, the bell finally rang and she ran home as fast as she could. When she walked through the door, a little black dog ran up to her and started barking in greeting.

"Echo, no. Hey be quiet! Stop it!" She laughed as the little dog jumped up onto her leg, hoping to be picked up. Skyler obliged, and she snuggled his body up close to her face.

"What am I going to do with you." She said as she nuzzled Echo's back. She set him down and he took off running towards the kitchen.

"Sweety? Is that you?" Skyler's mom's voice came from upstairs. They lived in a nice two story house that sat on the top of a mountain that overlooked the ocean. San Diego wasn't hit as hard with the solar flares as the rest of the world. Apparently, June Gloom actually did something good for once.

"Sky? Where are you?"

"Coming mom!" Skyler set her bag down by the door, and jogged up the stairs. Her mother was on the old rickety ladder, painting the ceiling in Skyler's room.

"Isn't today the day you're leaving?" Her mom asked.

"Yes and I should probably get packing. I have to leave in fifteen."

"Oh, well, don't let me stand in the way of your destiny!" Skyler's mom was a very kind and cheerful woman, who loved her daughter more than anything in the world. Skyler knew that, and was grateful for it, but that made it so much harder for her to leave. But she had to. A new life awaited. She put on a green blouse and black shorts, put her bathroom supplies in her now emptied backpack, hugged her mom, and walked out the door. She turned around and took one last look at the house that she would never see again.
