Devin
Aquamaroon base of operations, Pacific Ocean
2594
Devin sat waiting. Listening. Focusing. All around him, conversations of outrage and disbelief rang out. He was the only one who could stop it. The only one who could decide.
"Devin, what do you decide."
"I vote yes."
The crowd stared at him in awe. He had surprised them. He never surprised them. The Chief had wanted to spend a 190 million dollars in order to add in an East wing so they could supply more cadets. Being only 18 years old, Devin was the youngest Mediator that Aquamaroon had ever hired. He was also the most revered.
Devin was able to keep calm under pressure, stay level headed, and not let anything influence him from making the right decision. He was very critical of both sides, and very analytical. That's how he had excelled at cadet training, and how he had porogressed through the ranks so fast.
Aquamaroon was a government agency. It was in charge of most of the technological equipment soldiers used overseas. They created the combat mech suit that allowed soldiers to remotely pilot a fully equipped killing machine, from the safety of there military base back in the states. They made the first railgun, photon cannon, and came up with the idea of the tectonic rift. They also produced the finest military soldiers in the world. They were a secret, known only to the president, and his office. Their base of operations was located Underwater! And Devin held the most esteemed position.
As the Mediator, Devin had the final say in all matters, wether it be for base extensions, or more high tech military weapons.
After the discussion, Devin walked back to his dorm, where his roomate was there waiting.
"So how did it go?"
"It went fine Leo."
"Did it end up going your way?"
"It always goes my way. How many times do I have to tell you that my decision goes without question?"
"Alright, geez. Sorry for asking." Devin sat down on his bed that was across the room from Leo's. Even though he held the most important job in the entire facility, he still got the 10 by 10 dorms like everyone else. Devin fell over onto his back and looked at the glass ceiling, or, more accurately, what was beyond. He saw the fish that surrounded the reef. He saw leopard sharks, sea turtles, and even a dolphin, which was a rare occasion. Aquamaroon's base was located on a coral shelf 20 feet below the surface. Hidden with high level cloaking tech (that made it look like coral), and surrounded by the razor sharp branches of the natural coral, no diver would want to come down here.
"Everything is so fragile down here." Devin noticed. "All it would take is a shark wanting to rest on the ocean floor, and ramming into this window. Then we would all die."
"Alright Mr. Doom and Gloom, you know they have safety precautions right? If something like that did happen, the blastdoors would close, and it would stop the flooding, and worst case scenario, we have to use the emergency air bladders to float the facility to the surface." Leo explained.
"Yeah, I know that. I was the one who designed the failsafe precautions. But still."
"I know what you mean. You want something more. Everyone stationed here does. We want to be deployed."
"Except for you."
"Well, I'm an engineer, not a soldier."
"You got that right. You couldn't beat a two year old in wrestling if it would save your life."
"I wouldn't have to, 'cause I got you to do it for me." After that comment, neither of them said anything for a while.
"I'm not going to be here forever you know." Devin said. And it was true. People like to get what they want, and if they don't, they get angry. Being the Mediator put a huge target on Devin's back. One that he couldn't afford to have.
"Yeah, I know. I still like to hope." Leo replied.
"That's why you're a good friend."
"Aww, is the great Devin Kane developing a bond with little old me?"
"No." Devin replied defensively. They both burst out laughing.
"You know it bro." They were both laughing hysterically when a man walked in.
"The colonel needs you on the main deck." The man said.
Devin got up and stood facing the man. Leo got up also and patted Devin on the back.
"If the colonel wants Devin, he's gonna' get him." Devin followed the man out of the room, putting the glock Leo slid him into his back pocket.
Thankfully, it wasn't a trap. The colonel actually did need him, so there was really no need for the pistol. Devin sighed with relief, and took a step forward. The colonel was a tall, muscular, gizzled old man (though the way he moved never made people think of him as old). Standing next to him was another man, also old, but slightly taller than the colonel.
The stranger stepped forward. "Thank you for coming Devin. I know that recent event have put your life in jeopardy, and I was wondering if you would like to change that. My name is Commander Joshua Sandburn, and I am the head of another seret government organization called the Created Hero Experiment Science Facility, or the CHESF. I was wondering if you would be interested in being one of my subjects."
"Subjects like servants?"
"No. Subjects like experiments."
"What does that entitle?" Devin needed to know what he was getting into before he signed his life away.
"We have been researching the human biology for almost 30 years. You know about the Dark Atlas incident? I was the only person who had a conversation with him. He told me many things about the universe and life as we know it. He said that his power was failing and that he needed new champions to hold the torch and take his burden from him. Devin, I need you to save the universe."
Well that took an unexpected turn. "What type of experiments would you do on me."
"Well Devin, we read your bio, and we feel that you are the perfect candidate for Warlock."
"What's Warlock?"
"He's a superhero with telekenetic powers, and increased brain function. Along with that he will also have increased mobility, power, and reflexes."
"So, basically you're giving me super powers."
"Yes."
"Sweet. When do I start."
"Just come with me, and you will be Warlock in no time."
