Devin
CHESF Base
Being able to move things with his mind really spoiled Devin. He sat in his room playing a tablet, brushing his teeth, and combing his hair all at the same time, and he wasn't even breaking a sweat. All around him, scarlet lines of pure telekenetic energy pulsed around him, holding up, and sometimes moving the objects around him. Although he was actually moving the brush and comb, everything else in his room floated aimlessly through the air.
The testing process had been short, and relatively painless. In the corner of his room sat the one thing he didn't want to have flying. In a glass case sat his suit. It was more of a leotard than armor. It was mainly black, but had red stripes up sides of the torso, and running down its underarm. The suit came up into a face covering that was completely black except for the line that connected the two red semi-triangular "eyes".
Warlock. He thought to himself. That one word changed his life. Devin didn't know if it was for the better yet. He set down the tablet and waited for his digital character to die by the horde of candy monsters he had been absentmindedly destroying. He set everything in the room down gently: his stool, his desk, the lamp, the bed, and left his room heading for the gym. He stopped by the cafeteria and grabbed a fresh banana for brainfood. They had become his favorite food over the past two weeks he had been at the base. Devin found that after eating them, his powers worked better, and he didn't get drained as easily. For him, bananas had been all the rage: bananas in his cereal, peanut butter and banana sandwiches, apples and bananas, and, his personal favorite, banana créme pie.
When he got to the gym, he found Swipe and Carter there already. Carter was lifting weights, and Swipe was running on the "Super Treadmill." Devin, being curious, walked behind Swipe to see what difficulty he was at. The monitor read a 45 degree incline, and he was running at 748 miles per hour. He also noticed the calorie count go up rapidly. Swipe had been running for twenty minutes, and in that time had burned 1583 calories. I wish it was that easy for me to burn calories. Devin thought.
Devin walked over to the bench press. He put on two forties on either side of the bar, and set an eighty on both sides of the bench. While he was pumping his muscular arms up and down, his brain was working on lifting the other weights. Again, scarlet energy pulsed around the weights as they lifted up and down. This was Devin's favorite workout because it worked both body and mind. That and running in the air while his mind held him up.
After doing his typical routine, he walked over to Carter, who was lifting weights. He and Carter had become fast friends because of their mutual respect of their bodies and the gym. Devin and Carter were each others trainers, sparring partners, and they pushed each other to the limit.
"Wanna run?" Devin asked.
"In a minute. I have fifty reps left." Carter replied. He then went into overdrive and started pumping his arms so fast Devin almost couldn't see them. After about 45 seconds, Carter set the weights down and looked at Devin. "Alright, I'm ready." His forehead glistened from the exercise he just completed.
"Let's go then." They walked to the track and took their starting positions. Devin knew that Carter was inhumanly fast. Not as fast as Swipe, but fast nonetheless. The record he hit on the track was 32 miles per hour. Devin could also use his powers to increase his speed. He was able to telekeneticaly boost his legs so they moved faster, and got longer strides.
"Ready." Said Devin, following their usual routine.
"Set." Carter continued.
"Go!" They both yelled in unison and took off. The race was close for a long time, with Carter leading the first half by mere inches. Although he had boosted endurance, Carter slowed for the next quarter lap and Devin took the lead by a few feet. Carter then sped up and won the race by 0.014 seconds, based on the Auto-timer at the end of the track. They did their handshake, which consisted of them slapping each other's hands, tapping their feet together, and ultimately ended with them jumping and chest bumping.
They said their goodbyes and left for their rooms. While Devin was walking down the dull grey hallway, a feeling of emptiness overwhelmed him. The walls were so sad and depressing that it affected him. Instead of walking to his room, he tapped on Sky's door. He could sense her moving about inside. After a couple of seconds, she opened the door.
"Hi Devin." She said. Her red lips spreading into a warm smile. "What do you need?"
"Could I come in?"
"Sure!" She sidestepped so she was half behind the open door. Devin walked in, and she closed the door behind him. She was wearing a casual white T-shirt that hung loosely around her frame.
She hurriedly ran over to her desk and closed a open makeup kit, sliding it into one of the drawers. "Sorry, I wasn't expecting visitors." She ran and pulled up the covers of the bed which were strewn haphazardly over it. She then smoothed out the covers, and sat down. "So, what brings you here?"
Her eagerness quickly took away Devin's feeling of sadness. "Nothing in particular," he replied, "I was just walking down the hallway when the greyness got me down."
"Yeah, that happens to me sometimes too. I heard that June was into art, so maybe we could ask Glass if she would be able to paint it."
"That is actually a great idea!"
"Yeah!" She said, somehow smiling wider than before. "I am supposed to be the smart one after all."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, it's obvious where each of us fit into the team. I'm the smart one, Swipe's the jokester, June's the hot one, Carter's the muscle, Lizzie's the adorable one, and you're the voice of reason."
"Are you sure June's the hot one?" Devin instantly regretted saying that. Sky blushed furiously and looked down. "I am so sorry for saying that. That was really bad."
"That was pretty cheesy." She laughed. Devin silently cursed himself. He couldn't let his feelings get in the way of the mission. He needed to stay level headed. That was his job.
"I need to leave. I am sorry for bugging you." He got up and started walking out.
"Wait! I'm sorry!" She ran after him and put her hand on his shoulder.
"It's not your fault." He covered her hand with his and gently removed it from his arm. "Have a nice day Sky." He walked out, leaving her to stare out the door after him.
