Chapter Five
big trouble"
Aang.
If I try, I fail. If I don't try, I'm never going to get it.Sprinting up the stairs, Mayalean had woken up late this morning— due to exhaustion after the pro-bending match the previous night, even though she hadn't done anything but cheer.
She was meant to be helping Korra and her father with air-bending training, but she was severely behind on her chores since sleeping in. After feeding the sky bison in the keep, at lightning speed, she used her glider to finally make it over to the wooden gates— breaking out into a full on sprint as she reached the last few steps.
To her relief, only her siblings had been standing around, still waiting on her father and the Avatar to arrive for the day.
Ikki ran up to Mayalean excited, "Korra's gonna air-bend today!" She tried to inform, but the elder girl just shook her head smiling.
"I know!" Mayalean beamed, overflowing with anticipation. Finally, someone else she could play air ball with and not beat them so easily every time.
Meelo rode around the girls on his air scooter, almost knocking Mayalean over in the process, but she didn't mind like she usually would have— she was far too lost in her own thoughts.
As Korra climbed up the stairs with Tenzin, Ikki's enthusiasm grew to a colossal size. "Korra's gonna air-bend! Korra's gonna air-bend!" She repeated once more, running up to the Avatar.
"What is that contraption?" She looked over Ikki, averting her gaze to Mayalean uncertainly. Mayalean just gave a bright grin, almost jumping out of her skin in excitement to teach the Avatar.
The four siblings stood in a line as Tenzin guided Korra to stand in front of the wooden gates, which she just stared at in awe. "This is a time-honored tool that teaches the most fundamental aspect of airbending. Jinora, would you like to explain this exercise?"
Jinora walked up to the gates now, "The goal is to weave your way through the gates and make it to the other side without touching them."
"Seems easy enough," Korra announced, confidently.
Ikki bounced with excitement from next to Mayalean, who mentally cringed at what was coming next. "Jinora forgot to say that you have to make it through while the gates are spinning," Ikki rattled on.
Tenzin approached the gates now, elevating his hands above his head and thrusting them forward to release a gust of air at the, now spinning, gates.
Korra looked a little uncertain, as Mayalean's father grasped onto a leaf— holding it up for her to see. "The key is to be like the leaf," he releases it, and it flows through the gates with a certain grace. "Flow with the movement of the gates," he continued as everyone watched the leaf dance around the air.
