WONDER LAND
flashback
five years old
Fallon stood at the front of the classroom with a huge smile. She was excited for her turn to show what she had brought in for show and tell. The young girl had been waiting weeks to be chosen to bring in her item from home. And now it was her turn and she was beyond happy.
"Now, Fallon, what have you brought in this week." Mrs Hawkins questioned curiously, noticing the girls huge grin and the fact that her eyes lit up.
The brown hair girl grabbed the old book that sat on her desk and held it out in front of her.
"This is 'Alice in Wonderland'." She informed the rest of her class. Fallon was overly happy, even the thought of the book a smile made its way on to her face.
It was one of the original copies of the book that had been handed down for generations.
"Momma and Poppa say this book had been in our family since forever." Fallon ran her hands over the book. Despite it been old, it was still in fairly good condition.
The spine had broken and a few of the pages had fallen out. The book was something that her mother read to her before she slept, so she had fond memories of it.
It had been read so many times to her that she practically knew it word for word. But despite having it read to her hundreds of times, she would never change what book she wanted read as a bed time story. It would always be 'Alice in Wonderland'.
"That's really interesting Fallon, can we pass it around?" Mrs Hawkins asked softly as she placed her hand out for the book.
Fallon looked towards Chris nervously, who nodded in response. He knew how much the book meant to her and that it was taking a lot of trust for her to hand the book around.
"Why don't you tell us a little about what this book means to you Fallon?" Mrs Hawkins placed her hand down softly on the five year olds shoulder.
"Momma reads me this book before I go to sleep every night. Unless I'm at Nanna's, then Nanna reads it to me, Jax and Naya." Fallon smiled. Her eyes never left the red book that was been passed around.
Fallon loved going over to her Nanna's as they often re-enacted the book. Jax was always the mad hatter, Fallon was always Alice and Naya was the the Queen of Hearts. Sometimes, when Chris stayed over with them, he would be the Cheshire cat.
Chris smiled once he got the book. He ran his fingers over the spine and even flicked through a couple of the pages fondly.
Nanna Reyes read the book to him when he stayed over at hers. The families were always close. So he felt like the book had a significant part in his life too.
"I want it." Billy said angrily as he attempted to snatch the book from Chris' grasp.
Chris gave the boy an unimpressed look, hoping that he would let the book go. He didn't want Billy to break the book, especially considering how much it meant to Fallon and her family.
"I'm still looking." Chris glared. "Be careful. It's Fallon's." He shouted as Billy continued to pull at the book.
"Boys." Mrs Hawkins said sternly. "Billy, Chris is still looking at the book and we don't snatch now do we."
Billy shook his head guiltily, muttering an apology. Chris glared at Billy, but instead of passing it on to him, like he was supposed to. He walked up to the front of the classroom and handed it to Fallon.
"Thank you, Chrissy." Fallon smiled at the boy. She wrapped her arms tightly around the book, not wanting to let it go.
"Well, thank you for bringing it in Fallon. Maybe we can read some before home time?" Mrs Hawkins suggested, making Fallon nod in response. "Great, now go and take a seat you two."
Chris put his hand out for Fallon, guiding them back to their seats. Which were next to one another.
It seemed that no matter what, the pair were inseparable. They were with each other constantly at home and when they were at school they always were pair with one another in the seating plan.
Chris smiled across to Fallon. His hand lightly tapped the book. Silently telling the girl that it was safe and that she didn't need to worry any more.
Fallon smiled at the boy thankfully. He was always there for her. No matter what. She appreciated him for that.
She sat down and placed her book in front of her. She rested her head in her hand as she watched the other children talk about their show and tell.
