"Wake up honey, it's time to go to your new school!" My Mom says with excitement. I slowly open my eyes to see a blur of my Mom, with her dark chestnut hair slicked back into a neat bun. She's sitting on my bed expecting me to love the idea of going to a brand new school on the opposite side of the country. I rub my eyes and my vision becomes crystal clear. I look at my hot pink alarm clock. It reads 6:43 A.M. I shrug. "What's the matter Em?" She says, disappointed. My Mom got a promotion for her job that would make her paycheck almost triple times bigger. However, it required a move from the busy city of Los Angeles, California, where she was a surgeon, to the small town of North Oak, here in Michigan. I had to leave my best friend, Kacie, which was the worst part. We had been best friends since we were in diapers. Although, we made a promise to FaceTime each other at least once a week. I sit up in my bed slowly.
"I'm just nervous about my new school. What if nobody likes me? " I say with an anxious look on my face. My mom smiles and says,
"Don't be nervous sweetie, everything will be fine. You are an awesome young lady! Who wouldn't like you? Hey, look on the bright side, Dad is making pancakes in the kitchen!" I then take notice the aroma of pancakes and bacon in the air. I get out of bed, stretch, and walk over to my dresser. My Mom and I went shopping yesterday at North Oak Mall and got me a cute first day of school outfit. I slip on my white button up shirt, pink cardigan, and my frilly pink skirt from Nordstroms. I then go into the bathroom, open the cabinet with all my hair accessories, and curl my long, straight, dark brown hair. Then I swept it to the side to give my hair a sense of elegance. Before I go eat breakfast, I look out the window in the bathroom and sigh. The sun is just starting to peek over the horizon. It looks like the kind of sunrise in a Pablo Picasso painting. I then walk into the kitchen to find my dad wearing his silly little lime green cooking apron that says "Worlds Coolest Cook!" that I got him for Father's Day 2 years ago. I hug him.
"Good morning honey! What's cooking? Get it? Ha!" My Dad lets out a chuckle. He likes to call himself the jokester of the family, when he says the same 5 corny jokes that the family has heard at least 5 million times. I roll my eyes jokingly and walk into the dining room to find my 1 year old sisters, Olivia and Paige, sitting in Disney Princess high chairs munching on some Cheerios. I sit down at the table and wait for breakfast.
"Em-i-wee!" They both shout in their cute petite voices. I get up from my chair, hug them both, and sit back down. I take out my phone, and check my Instagram. I'm only following people from my old school in CA, and all I see in my feed is "We'll miss you!" Posts from all of my old friends. I like and comment on all of them when my mom comes out with three plates and sets the table. My dad comes out with the bacon and orange juice. He places them down and says "pancakes will be out in a minute!" As he strolls back in the kitchen, I look at the time. It reads 7:13 AM. I have to be at my bus stop at 7:45. I shut my phone off as my dad comes back into the dining room with the pancakes. My mom and dad sit down, and we discuss of course, my new school.
"So, Emily, are you excited about your new school?" My dad asks as he eats a bite of his pancake. I shrug again.
"Yeah I guess" I say, non-enthusiastically. My mom and dad glance at each other and we just all eat in silence until the clock on my phone reads 7:39 AM.
"Whoa! Would you look at the time, you have to get going Em if you want to catch the bus!" My mom says.
"Ok. I'll see you all later!" I say, hugging everyone goodbye.
"Goodbye Emiwee!" Olivia and Paige chant.
"Bye girls!" I say with a smile. I walk out the door. As I stand outside my door, I think to myself "This is where it all begins."
