Derek met up with Meredith a half hour later.
"Hey I am sorry about lunch."
"Oh it's no problem. Your wife is beautiful."
"...yea" He said with a bit of hesitation.
"What you don't agree."
"No um- I of course agree. She is like a model."
"So I finished the pre-op procedure and now he is ready for the OR."
They rolled the gurney together into the OR.
"So I know it's none of my business, but I saw you and Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd arguing a bit. Are you okay?"
"Yea, I am fine. She- uhh- didn't like the fact that my choice of friends happened to be pretty interns."
Meredith laughed a bit. "God, well. You would think that if you looked like that, you wouldn't even worry about other girls."
"What do you mean."
"I mean Addison is gorgeous. She looks exactly like Catherine Deneuve-"
"Isn't Catherine Deneuve blonde?"
"Yea I think. But you would think that when you look like her you wouldn't worry about people who look like me."
"Why, you're stunning. Not that- she should- or- you're stunning."
"And you are a terrible husband." Meredith said trying and failing to ignore his last comment.
"What?!"
"You barely agree with me when I am complementing your wife's beauty but you go on about mine."
"Oh yea. I need to work on that."
Meredith chuckled.
During their surgery, Meredith held the retractor completely still for 7 hours. Derek couldn't even believe how skilled she was. Every once and a while he would raise his head to look at her and she could feel his eyes on her. She would look up back at him and they would smile.
After surgery, Meredith and Derek were scrubbing out.
"Wow."
"Wow?" Derek asked and raised an eyebrow.
"That was incredible. You were incredible."
"You too. I can't believe an intern was able to hold the retractor that still for over seven hours."
"Yea. I am pretty incredible."
"You really are." Derek said as he started to shake his hands off.
Meredith turned off the water and while watching the last nurse leave the OR, walked to get a towel to dry her hands. As she reached the towels, she accidently ran into Derek.
Without moving away from him she quietly said, "I am sorry."
Derek remained still, her body was flush to his and inches away.
"It's okay." he whispered.
"can I?" She said as she reached for the towels. He moved slightly so she could grab one be stayed just as close.
"Thank you." She was now staring at his twinkling ocean eyes.
"Any time." He smiled down at her.
Once she dried her hands, she pulled off her mask and Derek copied her. They stayed quiet, staring at each other for a minute or two. Both of them switching off from staring at the other ones eyes to staring at the other ones lips.
Derek then started to lean down to reach her. Meredith met him in the middle of their height difference by standing on her tippy toes and grabbing onto his neck. They pulled even closer so that their foreheads and noses were touching.
"I can't" Derek whispered.
"You're married." Meredith reminded herself.
"I am married."
They pulled apart and Meredith grabbed to door to exit.
"Meredith."
She turned to face him.
"We are still friends?"
"Of course. You have to do more than that to scare me off."
