Chapter 8 - Hospital

I pace around the hospital's reception area nervously. It had been hours since Hajime passed out, and he still hadn't woken up. In that time, everyone had met up and decided that to stop the disease from spreading, they would isolate the infected from the rest. They decided to stay at the nearby motel, in case the disease had contaminated the first island, and leave Mikan and two helpers to stay with the patients and look after them. To everyone's surprise, Fuyuhiko volunteered, and of course, I did as well.

'U-Um... N-Nagito...' I jump at Mikan's voice. 'H-Hajime is starting to w-wake up i-if you want t-to s-see him...'

I nod and walk towards the room he was in. He looks towards me as I open the door.

'Hi...' He says weakly, 'W-Who are you?'

My eyes widen. Has he... forgotten everything again? I rush over to his bed. 'Hajime! D-Don't you remember me? It's me! Nagito! Your boyfriend!'

He blinks wearily. 'I... Had a boyfriend..? But... I don't remember... and I'm not gay...'

I laugh sadly. 'So you've forgotten again...'

'Forgotten w-what' he asks, 'The last thing I remember is... going to... what was it called again... Some... school... I th-think...'

'Mikan!' I shout. She comes running through the door.

'Y-yes?'

'Hajime's memory... It's getting worse! He can't remember what Hope's Peak is!'

Mikan rubs her arm nervously. 'W-well... I had a f-feeling this w-would happen... H-his memory m-might get worse a-and w-worse until h-he doesn't r-remember who h-he i-is...'

I freeze. 'H-he... Won't remember who he is..?'

Hajime notices us talking. 'Hey, are you talking about me? Where am I? Is this a hospital?'

I sigh. There isn't any use explaining the whole killing game if he's going to forget it again... 'You've lost your memory,' I say, making up a reasonable reason.

'Oh,' he said, 'So... What happened?'

'It's ... Complicated...'

Mikan looks behind her suddenly.

'I-Ibuki! N-No! Stop t-trying to e-escape!' she squealed before running after Ibuki, who was marching down the hallway.

I sit down on the edge of the hospital bed.

'So... How are you doing?' I ask.

'I'm fine... I just... don't remember... anything... There are random chunks missing from my memory... Just big empty gaps where I know that something happened, but I can't for the life of me remember what...'

'Well...' I say, trying to be optimistic, 'Someday you'll get your memories back... Someday...'

Hajime laughs sadly. 'Thanks, but... It's not like I'll remember you telling me any of this...'

'Oh...'

We're silent for a few seconds, before I speak.

'Well... It's nearly night time... I should head back to my cottage.'

I stand up to leave, before I hear a voice.

'Puhuhu! No you aren't!'

I sigh. 'What now?'

'Well... You have to look after the patients, don't you? So this is now an official rule! You have to sleep here, in the hospital!' he says cheerfully.

'Good idea,' I say, 'Apart from the fact that there are only four rooms. Three of them are being used by the patients, and we already agreed that Mikan should have the other one so she could stay overnight with the patients.'

He chuckles. 'Welp, I guess you'll just have to share with someone!'

'But all the patients are girls... except for...' I trail off, realising what Monokuma was doing.

'Puhuhu! What's the problem? Surely you don't mind sharing a bed with him? He is your boyfriend after all!'

'But-' I begin, before realising he'd already vanished. I sigh before turning back to Hajime. 'I guess I'm staying...'

He blinks a few times before shuffling to one side of the bed, gesturing for me to get in. I awkwardly get in next to him. 'Well,' I say, 'I guess Monokuma set us up here...'

He nods, apparently too tired to speak. I notice his eyes slowly close as he drifts off to sleep... He's cute when he's sleeping... Wait what? Don't think that, that's just creepy. But still...

I roll over and close my eyes. Suddenly, I get a thought. Fuyuhiko is one of the helpers, so surely he would have to stay at the hospital too... But where would he sleep? Maybe Mikan shared with one of the girls and he got the spare room? Still, I'd be extremely annoyed if Monokuma only told us about the supposed "rule". Lost in my thoughts, I fall asleep.

'Hajime, have you seen Na-'

I slowly open my eyes to see Fuyuhiko standing at the door. He stares at me in shock, before slowly backing out of the room. 'Why is it always me that sees- I have seen too much. I have seen- I'm going back to my cottage,' he says with a blank look on his face.

Why does he always get the wrong idea...

I suddenly notice something he said. 'I'm going back to my cottage.'

So Monokuma did set us up! That little-

'A body has been discovered!'
