Chapter 17 - The Traitor

'The killer is Chiaki!'

Time seemed to freeze. This can't be true...

Chiaki, the girl who was my friend, the girl who helped me when things were going badly, the girl who stopped me from killing myself... killed Nagito...

'No!' Sonia shouts, to my surprise, 'I refuse to believe that Chiaki murdered Nagito!'

'Well, it's the truth, and there's nothing you can do about it!' Monokuma says.

Sonia turned to Chiaki, who was silently staring at the ground.

'Chiaki! Tell me it isn't true!'

Chiaki blinked. 'I... can't tell you that...'

'You killed Nagito?' I asked in shock, 'Chiaki?'

'It seems that Nagito put his plan to out the traitor into action...'

I try to remember what Chiaki said on the morning I got my memories back.

'He's trying to make it so the traitor dies, even if it means taking you all down with him...'

'He...' I begin talking, but trail off.

'I was wrong,' Chiaki says, 'I thought he wanted to make you all vote wrong so that everyone, including the traitor, gets executed. But he actually wanted everyone but the traitor to get executed...'

'So... this was his plan all along? He wanted us to vote wrong?' I say. Somethings wrong...

'How does this link to you being the killer?' Sonia asks.

'The fire grenades...'

I look at her in confusion.

'Hajime, I told you about how Nagito brought poison back from the Funhouse. Well, that poison is a gas when heated.' she says.

Suddenly, everything fits into place. 'So, if he put the poison in a fire grenade and started a fire, there was a chance that the traitor would throw the poisoned fire grenade and unknowingly kill him...'

Peko speaks up. 'No, it would be more than a chance. Nagito was the Ultimate Lucky Student. There's no doubt that the traitor was the one that threw the fire grenade.'

A wave of realisation hits me. If the traitor threw the fire grenade, and Chiaki killed him...

'Chiaki... you're the traitor, aren't you?'

I look her in the eyes, hoping I'm wrong.

I wasn't

'Aw, you totally guessed right! I'm the traitor.'

Chiaki... is the traitor...

'It isn't true! Chiaki isn't the traitor!' Sonia shouts.

'I'm sorry Sonia...' she says sadly, 'It's true. I am the traitor... I... killed Nagito...'

'Hold up,' says Kazuichi, 'If Nagito got killed by the fire grenade, then what's with the knife?'

Just as I was about to answer, Gundham speaks. 'If he stabbed himself in a precise area, it's possible he wouldn't die instantly, and would stay alive until the poison reached him.'

'Even so,' Akane says, 'He would have to be really lucky to stab the right place.'

Fuyuhiko sighs, annoyed. 'Peko already said, he has Ultimate Luck.'

'It's a shame to ruin such a lovely conversation,' Monokuma butts in, 'Buuuuut... I'm getting bored, so...'

Fear floods my mind.

'I have a special punishment planned for the remaining survivors! Let's give it everything we've got! It's punishment time!'
