Hiyo, welcome to this story! Just author-nim here to tell you what's going on... because this book has historical significance and I'm a dork for history.
Do y'all know who Alan Turing is? If you do, then fell free to skip to the bottom of this. If you're currently furrowing your eyebrows together and asking what this has to do with the story, let me explain...
Alan Turing was a mathematician and decipherer from England, and he was the man, along with his team, who built the machine that broke the Enigma code. Now, I bet your next question is, 'What's the Enigma code?'. Enigma was a machine that the Germans built to encrypt their messages during WWII (it sorta looked like a typewriter, but when you pressed "A" for example, it would type "G" or some other letter/number based on the settings) and they were nearly impossible to crack. I will get to more specifics about the exact parameters of this throughout the book, but it's important to note that Soobin (our lovely bunny boy) will be playing the role of Alan Turing when he was trying to decipher Enigma in the early 1940s.
Feel free to skip this part (because I'm a dork and can't help myself) but Alan Turing was truly incredible. First of all, the computer/cell phone you're currently reading this on most likely wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the advances he made in artificial intelligence. He invented what's called "the Turing test" which is how computers are currently still evaluated in order to differ whether they are artificially intelligent or not, and it defines artificial intelligence itself. He was also the first person to try and build a computer that could 1) think like a person and 2) learn like a human, which is what all our computers do nowadays.
Second, Alan Turing was gay. Seriously, I'm 100% telling you the truth that he was gay in a time where it was illegal in England. And a lot of the ways he thought about computers stemmed from him being gay and knowing he was different than everyone else. So if you ever hear a homophobic comment, you can always tell them that their precious cell phone wouldn't exist if it wasn't for a gay man back in the 1940s and 1950s.
Anyways, I'll stop being a dork now lol. I think the story will definitely make more sense when you begin to read it, but if you're ever confused, I'll be sure to answer any questions. Also, the main inspiration for this book came from the movie The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch, which is about Turing's life. I highly recommend it because it's a great movie.
And, as always, a few of these chapters will have very heavy topics, so if you ever feel uncomfortable reading, please stop. I say this every time, but your mental health is more important than this story ever will be, and I truly mean that.
And lastly, this book is dedicated to @Kimi_scriptwriter and @LilCupCake23 who I can always count on to fangirl about yeonbin. Love you two. This is for you.
And for Alan Turing, who saved millions of lives and who's effort during the war was kept a secret by the government for decades before he was finally recognized for his achievements, but by then it was too late. Thank you for everything you've done.
(P.S. Some dates in this book aren't entirely accurate, but I can't change it because it won't fit with the story line... Churchill didn't become Prime Minister until around April of 1940 and Enigma wasn't broken until 1942. Other than that, I think most of the dates/time periods during in this book were accurate. Sorry for the confusion!! - 12/7/2021)
I love you guys, and I hope you enjoy this little journey together.
And with that, let's begin...
