Unlike his mom, Mateo slept fine through the night

Unlike his mom, Mateo slept fine through the night. He didn't kick or smack anyone when he slept, which Eviana was grateful for. She had grown up with Alvaro and since her family didn't have the best home, she was forced to share a bed with her younger brother. Most nights she ended up on the floor or even a bloody nose from Alvaro smacking her face with his hand.

She would've slept fine, but something was keeping her up. Maybe it was more than one thing, multiple people to be more specific. Pacho, Miguel, and Steve. They were constantly living in her mind and she couldn't do anything about it no matter what.

Morning came and Mateo decided it was time to wake up his mom by jumping on the bed. It seemed to be the only option in his head. As he jumped, Eviana groaned, rubbing her tired eyes with the back of her hand.

"Breakfast!" Mateo giggled, still jumping on the bed. "I'm hungry."

Eviana finally opened her eyes and was greeted by her son's beautiful baby face. She ran her hand through his hair, then cupped the side of his face. He was looking like Miguel Ángel everyday.

"Is the little baby hungry, huh?" Eviana sat up, her back hitting the plain white wall. Mateo nodded eagerly. "And what does my beautiful boy want to eat? Some eggs and toast with a nice glass of orange juice—"

She heard a tiny gasp coming from him. Mateo gently placed his tiny hands on his mom's mouth. "I don't like orange juice anymore. Only apple juice."

Eviana took his hands away from her mouth. "Right, right, sorry. Apple juice for my beautiful boy," she heard a small thank you come out his lips. "You know, uncle Pacho called me after you went to sleep. He told me he misses us."

Pacho did call. He didn't ask about her meeting with Miguel since he figured she'd like to keep it private or she would tell him personally and not over the phone. He arranged a private plane for them to take them straight home. He didn't want his sister or nephew to go on a plane with strangers anymore.

"I miss him too. And Helena and Navegante and uncle Chepe and—"

"Okay you little rascal, you miss everyone. They miss you so much. That's why after breakfast, we are leaving." Eviana kissed Mateo's forehead. She saw Mateo's frown on his face and started to get worried. "What's wrong?"

Mateo looked down sadly. "We're leaving dad?"

And there it was. The mention of leaving Miguel Ángel. She wasn't surprised that he brought up his dad.

"We'll come back some other day, I promise. Your dad isn't going anywhere. I mean it."

Throughout breakfast, Mateo couldn't stop talking about how much he missed all his uncles and Helena. Eviana was glad he loved them as much as she did. She focused her attention on Mateo, but she couldn't help but think about Steve Murphy. It was too long since they last saw each other. Mateo was just a baby when he met Steve and now he had grown so much. She wasn't going to be surprised if Mateo didn't remember Steve.

Steve was always good to her and Mateo. He was a good man and deserved all the good things in life and, in Eviana's mind, she wasn't exactly a good thing. Her family was full of problems that she couldn't run away from. She wasn't wanted by the police, but she still had to look over her shoulder constantly. She didn't want that life for Steve.

It was time for the mom and son to leave the hotel. Eviana had talked to Walt before leaving about the private plane before thanking him for everything he did for her. She even teased him for being a softie after he married.

The plane ride back to Cali was somewhat peaceful. Mateo kept looking put the small window, amazed by the clouds and the blue sky while Eviana tried to get some sleep while also keeping an eye on Mateo. Eventually, the plane landed in Pacho's large backyard, where he was standing beside Navegante and Helena with a giant smile on his face.

"Look, Mateo." Eviana pointed out the window and saw Helena waving. Mateo waved back and patiently waited for someone let him off the plane.

When the small door opened, Mateo tried his best not to fall from the small steps. A sicario helped him, which Mateo thanked, and the boy ran straight towards Helena, his uncle and Navegante with his arms open for a hug.

"Thank you." Eviana thanked the sicario who helped her off the plane. She fixed strands of her hair that had fallen to the side of her face and saw how happy her son looked to be surrounded by the persons he loved so dearly. While Helena and Navegante dealt with the excited boy who wanted to tell them everything about his short trip to Mexico, Pacho approached his sister with his hands in his pockets. He looked a bit suspicious to Eviana as of he needed to tell her something.

So she asked.

"What did you do, Helmer Herrera?"

Pacho cringed when she used his birth name. Like most families, the Herrera family always used their birth names whenever someone was in trouble.

"Well, Eviana Sylvia Herrera, Gilberto is sending me to your favorite country." Pacho refused to look at her in the eye. He looked everywhere, but her face to see her reaction.

"And why does he want to send you to Mexico?" Eviana questioned. Pacho didn't answer. "Pacho, why? Tell me."

"Business with Amado. That's all." Pacho finally spoke. "I promise it's just business talk with him. I'll be home soon."

He finally looked at her. She had the same look on her face the day the police came knocking on Miguel Ángel's door. The day of his arrest, she felt so alone and now she had a feeling that she would be alone again.

"Don't be like that, Eviana, I'm coming back. Alvaro is coming with me. I would've asked you, but you just came back and you have Mateo to take care of." Pacho explained. "I didn't think you would want to go back after seeing him."

Eviana knew her brother was just looking out for her. The day of Miguel's arrest, Pacho took care of his sister until she was back to her normal self. He spent countless nights hearing her quiet sobs. It hurt her to see her suffering, but she pulled through.

"I don't want anything to happen to you or asshole Alvaro," she said, earning a chuckle from her older brother. "I don't want to be alone."

"And you won't be. We'll be okay, Evi." He took one hand from his pocket and pulled her into a side hug. "Amado is a friend. I promise we'll be okay."

Eviana nudged his side. "Yeah, you better be."
