"So when are we going to meet this woman?"
Steve looked at Evi, who was getting Mateo ready for a day out. That morning, Steve decided to call his parents and give them an update on his plan. All they knew was that their son was 'helping a friend', as they called it. But Steve knew Evi wasn't a friend.
"Um, how old are you guys again? Maybe until y'all are ninety or you hit those triple digits," Steve leaned on the kitchen counter. From his spot, he couldn't stop smiling at Evi, who was struggling since Mateo didn't want to put on his shoes. "I'll be back home soon, bye."
"Okay, just be careful. It's still dangerous for you even if the bad people are dead." His mom's voice said.
And with that, he ended the short call. He set the phone down and walked towards the mom and son. He then knelt down next to Evi and took the small shoe from her hands. "Are you giving your mom a hard time, Mateo?" He waved the shoe in front of the child's face.
"No . . . Maybe."
"Then that means no ice cream, right Evi?" Steve nudged her elbow.
"Yes, maybe if you'll put your shoe on, we will get ice cream. Deal?" Evi suggested.
Mateo made a thinking face. Steve laughed and took the opportunity to slip the small shoe onto Mateo's foot. "Cheater!" The boy gasped.
"Better luck next time, pal, but this means we get ice cream now so come on. We have some ice cream waiting for us. How many scoops are you getting? I'm thinking three for me." Steve took Mateo's hand and led him to the front door.
Mateo held up a whole hand. "Five. I want two cherries and lots of sprinkles."
"Alright, but if you don't finish it, I'm going in. Cherries and sprinkles are my favorite," Steve chuckled. He stopped walking when he noticed that Evi hadn't moved from her spot. "You okay?" He questioned.
Eviana sighed, a loving smile on her face. "Yeah, more than okay. Let's go." She stood up and grabbed her bag from the couch.
That's how most days went as Steve tried to help Eviana and Mateo with their 'problem' of staying in Colombia. The thought of marriage and applying for citizenship always crossed his mind, but he didn't want to rush anything in their relationship, if they even called it that. He really didn't know what to call it.
If she was being honest, Eviana didn't mind calling Steve her boyfriend. He kinda already acted like one before, they just never put a label on it. Technically, Steve had already met her brother, except Alvaro, and Pacho seemed to like Steve. He was pretty sure they were soulmates.
So when the lawyer suggested marriage, Eviana didn't seem to not like the idea. She was completely fine with the idea of Steve being her husband and her being his wife. She just wished things would be different, those things being having her brothers present on her big day.
But then she started to realize how would Steve's parents react to her in general. A strange woman marrying their son. They did technically skipped the boyfriend girlfriend stage so the situation made it seem like she was marrying Steve for Citizenship. In that moment, Eviana realized how much she truly loved Steve.
She wasn't trying to get over Miguel Ángel, those feelings were long gone. She admitted it. She loved Steve Murphy with all of her heart and wasn't planning on leaving him heartbroken.
So she did was she felt was right. She married Steve Murphy.
It wasn't a big wedding like she dreamt of all those years ago, but she was content with her day that was filled with love and happiness. Pacho couldn't be there so Eviana did the best she could to have him with her on her day. She wore one of his rings that he had left for her.
She purchased a white slip dress for her wedding and wore minimal makeup. She had her hair pinned up using one of her mother's hair pieces. Mateo even got to wear a fancy suit Pacho had been saving for him without Eviana knowing.
"You're my wife now." Steve took her hand that now had a simple wedding ring on and kissed it.
The couple stood at the altar as the priest congratulated them on their marriage. Eviana looked at her son, who was seated on her friend's, corina, lap. Few guests attended since it was a last minute and small wedding. Javi couldn't make it, but he sent his congratulations to the happy couple in form of alcohol and a pack of cigarettes.
Some of the Cali Cartel's surviving sicarios attended. They were the ones who made sure to record and take pictures to show Pacho later on. Alvaro didn't make an appearance, but what else was new?
"Holy shit, we did it." Eviana smiled. That was all she could do, smile, laugh and cry tears of joy. Something in her life, apart from Mateo, had gone right.
"I love you." Steve whispered and kissed her lips.
"I love you more." She said and she meant every word.
That night was also the night Miguel Ángel was informed of Eviana's wedding. He wasn't sad. At least not completely. He didn't need to be told who Eviana had married, he knew.
Miguel Ángel was glad Eviana had someone to take care of her.
