"Steve? What's wrong? Are you hurt? Please tell me you're okay

"Steve? What's wrong? Are you hurt? Please tell me you're okay." Eviana asked, running a hand through her hair.

Steve sighed. "Even after I've been a dick to you, you're still concerned about me."

"I'll always be."

Carrillo was back. Javi had gone out with Trujillo and Carrillo to go after Escobar's spotters. Steve stayed behind with Jacoby to guide them through the streets of Medellín to find said spotters. Steve took the opportunity to call Eviana.

"I'm okay. Are you?" He asked.

Truly, she didn't know if she was. She had Mateo and Pacho with her. She was okay, at least that's what she told herself.

"Yeah, I'm okay." She said quietly. "I have to ask, how do you have my number? I wanted to ask Javi about it too since he called me, but i didn't get the chance." Eviana sat in Pacho's bed.

"Brother dearest had the genius idea of giving Navegante your number. You know, incase something comes up. That sort of thing." Steve explained. "I won't give it to anyone if that's what you're worried about. I swore I wouldn't."

"I know you won't. I trust you." Steve felt honored to have Eviana's trust. It meant the world to him hearing those words. "How are you? I know we left on bad terms, but I still care about you, Steve. I do. I want you to know that."

"I know."

Steve knew it. And he cared about her even more. Now, he cared for Mateo. Even though they only met once, Steve would protect Mateo with his own life. Growing up as an only child, Steve got the attention of his parents most of the time. He enjoyed it. They were there for all his baseball games, his award ceremonies and his high school graduation. He was grateful for having that opportunity. Eviana wasn't so lucky. She didn't finish high school, her parents never went to school ceremonies or picked her up from school. Pacho did that. Steve knew how much Eviana needed someone to care for her. Pacho had been doing that for his whole life. Steve wanted Eviana to know that he would care for her the way she did for him.

"I have some good news." Eviana said. "I'm sending a picture of Mateo to his dad. I don't want Miguel to feel left out or Mateo to not know his dad. They deserve to know each other even if it's through photos."

Steve was speechless for a few seconds. He was happy about it. Mateo deserved to know his dad even if he was a criminal in jail. Mateo didn't do anything wrong after all.

"That's great, Evi. I'm happy for you and Mateo. Really." Steve spoke. "I'm really happy."

She knew Steve would be busy at this time of the day. She just didn't understand why he decided to call when a dangerous man was on the loose.

"Not that I don't enjoy talking to you, but why are you calling? Did Javi annoy you so much that you have to escape for a few seconds?" Steve didn't respond. Eviana didn't want to upset him, she felt like it wasn't the best time to be having a casual talk while he was at work. "Can we talk later? I don't want to keep you busy from your work."

"Yeah, sorry. We'll talk later." Steve said. He was about to say a few meaningful words, but stopped himself from doing so. "Goodbye, Evi."

"Goodbye, Steve."

Steve knocked on the office door. After confronting his partner, he wanted some answers. Javi had told him that Carrillo had shot a kid in the head to make a point. He was just a kid, he didn't know better. Javi was still a bit shaken up from the event so he headed home while Steve went to talk to Carrillo. When Steve opened the door, he found Carrillo with his back facing him. He slowly closed the door and approached the man.

"I'd like to talk to you about what happened tonight." Steve kept his eyes on Carrillo.

Carrillo showed no emotion. "What do you think happened?"

Steve tilted his head. "I know I got left behind on purpose."

"That was for your own best interest." Carrillo brought his the glass up to his lips.

"You don't know a goddamn thing about my best interest." Steve replied.

"You know, Murphy, what happens put there isn't really for everyone."

"But it is for Peña."

"You're not Peña." Carrillo had started to get angry. He was tired, he was vexed, he wanted to go home.

"Cause I'm a damn gringo." Steve blurted out.

"Because I trust him."

Steve started pacing a bit while he argued, something he kept doing practically his whole life. "Why don't you try me? This fight against Escobar, you want to win it. These guys aren't fighting by the same rules, so why should we?" He stopped his pacing to look at Carrillo dead in the eye.

"You know what that means?" Carrillo asked.

"Oh, I do. So whether this is about protecting me or protecting you, stop icing me out." Steve took one last look at Carrillo before walking to the door.

But before he could fully leave the office, Carrillo had one last thing to say to him. "Be careful with that woman of yours. She's not the most trustable person on earth. She hadn't even told the dad about her son."

Steve clenched his jaw. He didn't face Carrillo as he thought of Eviana and Mateo. "You don't get to to talk about them."

And with that, Steve Murphy left the office.

Steve never called back. Eviana waited by the phone countless hours and nothing. She thought about calling him, but negative thoughts ran through her head. He probably had a fight at work and didn't want to talk to anyone, not even her. After putting Mateo to sleep, she still sat by the phone a few more minutes in case he called, but still nothing. After a while she called it a day and went to sleep with Steve on her mind.

It was something that happened daily. Steve was always in her thoughts. From morning to night. It stressed her a bit to the point where she had a sicario go to the embassy or the police academy to see if he was okay. Pacho still didn't let her leave the house and wasn't planning on it until he was sure that Escobar wasn't a threat anymore.

She was still stuck on Miguel too. He is, after all, the father to her son. She had already put the pictures in an envelope with an address printed on it. It sat on her bedside table untouched. Eviana decided that she would wait a few days then mail Miguel the pictures. She spoke about Miguel to Mateo often, telling him about his younger days that he had told her. She obviously left out all the bad stuff and people.

"And maybe one day, your dad will take you to the park or get ice cream or to school when you're bigger." Eviana would tell Mateo even though the little boy had no clue what she was saying. "You'll like that, won't you?"
