GRACE POV

"Hey, your ten o'clock is here." Maggie informed me.

I set aside my laptop and stood. "Thanks, Mags." I said, walking pass her through the door.

After a long and tiring meeting, I went to check on Lena. She'd been doing so good for the past month and a half here. The girl really was talented and thorough. Meeting her at her desk, I saw the teen shoving food into her mouth as she worked. I shook my head with a smile, she was always eating.

"Hey, you doing okay?" I asked standing across from her.

She finished chewing and answered. "Yeah, I'm almost done."

"Did you make that?"

She looked down to her Parsnip noodle chicken alfredo. "Nope, Rae did after I begged her. She did not give in easily." She laughed. She mentioned Rae a lot to me.

I felt this pang of want and regret in my body. I missed her. Over a month and I still couldn't get her out of my mind or heart. Yet, I couldn't bring myself to call her. My fear of being betrayed again held me captive, and I let it stay in control everytime my thumb hovered over her number. Every time her name popped up on my screen, it took everything in me to not answer. The calls had stopped a couple of weeks ago, and I wondered if she finally gave up on me. I couldn't stop thinking of whether or not there was another woman in her bed. Surely there was.

I pushed everything down and smiled at Lena. "Well, you seem to have her on her toes."

"I do try, I'm surprised she hasn't kicked me out yet. She asked about you last night." She said casully.

My heart rate picked up. "W-what did she ask?"

"Just stuff. She misses you." She continued to eat while I had to remember how to breathe.

"I'm sure she's fine." I cleared my throat and stood upright. "I'll get back to work." I walked away before she said anything.

Whether she missed me or not, didn't matter. She had to move on and forget about me. Though, I doubt she hadn't found someone to fill my spot. Rae was a masterpiece. Muscled and toned in all the right places, tattoos that made any woman intrigued and not to mention those eyes of hers. Her eyes alone could make you surrender to her will. A woman like that didn't pine over any girl for too long. She'd move on with her life and I'd be a memory. Maybe if I was lucky, she'd think about me once or twice in her future. But I wasn't meant to be a permanent part of her life.

"Here's everything you wanted." Peter tossed me the file.

I wasted no time in opening it and reading.

He had VSD...

A hole in the wall that separates the heart's...

Fatigue of the heart...

Congestion of lungs...

I kept on reading, feeling my heart break the more I did. It didn't matter who his parents were, I was there the day he was born. I held him before his own mother did because of her complications. He was my nephew, only two years old and I couldn't just let him just die.

"Fuck." I whispered, blinking back my tears.

"So, you're helping I take it?" Kelly asked, sitting next to her husband.

"My parents are old people, Gemma has her own family and the bitch Haley blew everything she had away." I leaned forward, placing my elbows on my knees. "I can't let him pay for what they did."
