Carson's POV
I rubbed crust out of my eye and sighed. I rolled over and stared at the red blinking clock. 6:30 am. It was way too early to get up. But if I don’t, Dad would break down the door. I sat up and groaned.
“Carson, are you awake?” My mother’s sweet voice whispered.
“Yea, I’m up,” I replied, throwing on a shirt. I opened the door and smiled at my mother. She was petite with big brown eyes. She had a few wrinkles around her eyes filled with pain and wisdom.
“Your father wants you to go to work with him later on today.” Mom patted my arm. I rarely go to my dad’s job. He was a doctor and usually he hates it when I’m snooping around in his stuff. Keep your hands in your pockets. Always wear gloves. Don’t ever touch anything. Hearing that over and over again when I was little, was really annoying, “Now, hurry downstairs. Breakfast is waiting for you.”
I followed my mother to the kitchen. Dad held coffee in his hand, eyes dark. He had stubble on his chin and thin lips. He looked exhausted.
“Did your mother tell you you’re coming to work with me?” Dad asked, kissing her on the head briefly.
I nodded, “How come though?”
He didn’t smile, “I want you to see what being a Doctor is all about. You take this stuff not serious and that disappoints me.”
The I-want-you-to-be-a-Doctor talk again. He was driving me crazy. I didn’t want to be a Doctor. I didn’t want anything to do with this family. But I kept my mouth shut.
Mom poured me a glass of orange juice and passed it to me. I took it willingly. I heard a loud knock of the door and my mother stiffen.
“I’ll get it.” Dad whispered, heading for the door. I peered through the kitchen door, trying to see who it is. It was the woman Elder. Her expression was grim. She said something to my dad and came to the kitchen. My dad followed behind her, coming to the kitchen to take his suitcase and gave a soft kiss to my mom.
“Where are you going?” Mom asked.
“To work.”
I glanced at him, “What about me?”
He frowned, “You’ll meet me there later. The Elder wants to talk to you about some matter.”
I turned to the Elder. Her eyes were staring at me intently. I felt uncomfortable. Dad left and Mom turned to the Elder, “Would you like me to get you a drink?”
The Elder shook her head, “No, Carson, can we speak alone?”
“C’mon,” I stepped past my mother and headed for my room. The Elder followed and closed the door after herself, “What is this about?”
“Your file was stolen and an Elder was murdered.”
I nodded, “Was it your partner?”
Her eyes turned red, “Yes but that is not the concern right now. I have kept your file hidden as best as possible. Whoever has this, knows everything about you now.”
I shrugged, “They know I’m a murder?”
The Elder nodded.
“Blame it on a Seeker.” I suggested. No one would look into it if it was a Seeker. All this wolves here were scared shitless.
