A stay-at-home dad is a luxury that many people who come from a background like mine do not have. I've been an only child and suffered the downsides that go along with that. I didn't have a sibling to complain with when we suddenly moved two years ago to follow my mom's promotion. I didn't have a sibling to play with when I found myself friendless and alone in my bedroom. But I always had my dad. When I cried, he was there. When I felt like I was about to die after a skateboarding incident, he was there. As for my mom, she was always, and even right now, in an office.

I slipped my bag off my shoulders while strolling through the front door. The first person I saw was my dad. He was making us grilled cheese sandwiches and even cut mine into two triangles. "First day of school jitters. Are they gone?" The plate slid across the island and stopped in front of my face. I couldn't help but stare at it for a while as I thought about the ham sandwich that was currently soggy in my bag. "Or... maybe you can tell me why all of your fingers are bandaged... again."

My eyes darted to my hands that were folded over each other. I quickly tucked them into my inner elbows and released a nervous chuckle. "Paper cuts. I had to handle a lot of first day homework. Which means I'm going to be very busy."

I snatched my bag off the floor and rushed upstairs to my bedroom. I didn't worry about the grilled cheese because he always ate what I didn't.

Now that I was alone, I started peeling all of the bandaids off my fingers before my mother was next to question my injuries. The bleeding stopped but my pinky was a mess. I knew my dad saw blood smeared all over it but he's never been one to make me feel uncomfortable about answering him.

I didn't have time to fully digest what happened today. I had to carry on as if it was any other day and get dressed for Cory's house. It was routine to not be at our own houses for as long as possible for the first week of school just to spend time with anyone but our parents.

I quickly washed my hands then made sure my curls weren't frizzy after a long day of dodging introductions and welcome backs. I could have spent an extra two minutes changing into a new outfit but it took me ten minutes instead. I didn't want to be too flashy or too boring. I went with a casual instead of a pretty look.

"Knock. Knock." My dad said as he opened my bedroom door. "Josie and Tonya are here. Please hurry. Their music is very loud and of bad taste." I laughed as I followed him out of my bedroom and we walked downstairs together. "Don't stay out too late. Your mother wants to see you too."

I went out the front door while he went to the living room. Josie and Tonya were honking the horn and singing along to pop throwbacks. I wasn't embarrassed, just wondering why.

"Are you ready to get fucked up!" Josie screamed as I walked past the driver's window. "Because we are ready to get fucked up!"

She had a small red car that she got as a freshman for her birthday. When I met her, the first thing she told me was how she wished she could drive it. Now, there isn't a moment where she's not in the car. Even at school, she calls in sick from class to go sit in her car and listen to music.

"I don't think I've ever said this before, but Cory is kinda cute." Josie gasped at Tonya's confession. I would have too but I didn't have the energy. "Once you get out of a serious relationship like me then all the guys you haven't noticed before began to turn into large chunks of gold. I got to have it."

"Gold?" Josie gagged. "You should always want a diamond. They're significantly worth more." The two of them fell into a mutual agreement that turned into them both obsessing over the guys on the football team. "What about you, Tahlia? You had one crush since I've known you and I never heard of him again."
