I had a deep feeling in my gut that things weren't going to go as smoothly as we thought. What was supposed to start off in tears of joy turned into screams of horror with Josie as the star of the show.
"I swear Tonya has been finding new ways to absolutely piss me off!" I looked up from my suitcase and saw Josie pacing around my bedroom floor as I tried to figure out if I needed to pack more underwear or not. "Last minute she cancels and tells me she's actually having a family get together this Christmas season. That's so repulsing."
I simply shrugged as I settled on stuffing a few more fancy underwear in my bag. "Some people actually enjoy spending time with their family. I mean, I used to."
Josie pouted before colliding into me causing us both to fall out on to the bed. "Your situation is different. Your parents are arguing messes while hers are actually normal people. Where's the fun in hanging out with a normal set of parents?"
"Josie, what color coat should I bring?" I held up my puffy yellow one and puffy pink one with all the strength I had since we were lying down. She pointed at yellow which shocked me because her favorite color is pink.
"I'm bringing my yellow one so I think we should match at least one day while we're there." Using all her body weight, she pushed against me to push herself up and to her feet. I followed soon after then zipped my suitcase the best I could. "I was just hoping that we would over power the boys. Now we're equal and I hate being equal."
I raised an eyebrow while watching her drag her feet out of my bedroom door. "I'll be at your house in ten minutes. I just have to grab my makeup bag." She gave me a thumbs up before skipping down the stairs and I soon heard the front door close.
The plan was to get out of here before my mom got off work so I could avoid the speech and just let her ground me after I return. Both of my parents should have known there was no way I could spend my holidays under these kinds of conditions.

"It's a beautiful day, isn't it!" Erikkson slapped the top of his jeep with a huge smile on his face. "Also, Victor put me on to deep cleaning the interior of my car. I didn't even know that was a thing. So it's lemon scented and smooth riding for the next five hours."
Josie rolled her bag past him to avoid saying something that would ruin his happy mood.
I stopped right in front of him and handed over my portion of the gas money for the trip. "Thank you. Your car hasn't always been the best smelling." He smiled before quickly hopping in the drivers seat.
Once everyone was settled in their spots, Dwane and Danai started up their car and took off out of this neighborhood. We were to follow them all the way to the lake house and Erikkson and I would be taking turns since we were the only two with a license.
"You should nap before it's your turn," Josie whispered while resting her head on my shoulder. "And when Erikkson goes to sleep, we'll pull over and put me behind the wheel."
"We can't give him a heart attack days before Christmas." We shared a laugh then dosed off.
I paced around for a while as Erikkson filled the gas tank and Josie and Victor bought our requested snacks. "My legs feel like noodles." My attempt to spark a conversation failed when I looked at Erikkson and saw he wasn't even paying attention to me. Instead, he was staring over at Danai who was fixing her hair in Dwane's side mirror. "She's pretty isn't she?"
"Huh?" He jumped. "I mean... Danai? She's alright," he huffed. "You and I both know I'm not the dating type. I don't want to have to get into the ring with Dwane for breaking his sisters heart."
I nodded slowly. "I think that you think you're an asshole when you're not. You care about people but act like you could give a fuck less. Just talk to her or any girl besides us and you'll see it."
"High school relationships are all trash. Each and everyone of you have been in a relationship and where are they now?" He had a point. "You should see what goes on in my head. I'm adopted and all I think about is how my parents failed so bad that they had to give me up."
His adoption was a sensitive topic for him. At least it used to be. After a while, he just stopped talking about it and me being new to this friend group at that time, I never said a word about it.
"You don't know what your parents situation was." I simply forced a smile on my face to avoid looking sorry for him.
"Yeah, whatever." He put the pump back where it belong then closed the gas cap. "Heads up," he shouted while throwing me the keys. "You just have to get us there alive."
"I know how to drive!" I got in the front seat while he sat in the back. It was just in time for Josie and Victor to exit the store.
"Hurry up, Victor! I want to make it there before I'm eighty!" She jumped in the front seat and passed me my snacks before throwing the rest of the bag to the boys in the back. "On a scale of one to ten, how cute do I look?"
"Sixteen." Josie pretended to pass out in her seat. "Why?"
She glanced back at Victor and Erikkson who were looking at a video on one of their phone then back to me. "I've been texting Dwane ever since I snuck his number off Victor's phone and I think we're getting along well. Every time I think the conversation is about to die, he doesn't let it."
"I think everyone is falling in love with them because they're new and... stunning. Also, he's way better than Cory or Griffen will ever be."
She cheesed so hard I thought her cheeks would break. "Exactly. I just can't do it alone. You three are bound to have so much in common. I just need you to drop a few hints so I don't have to carry this weight on my back."
I didn't know how much in common I could have with rich kids but I was aware of what she was implying. "Oh, of course! I don't mind pushing this agenda." I winked at her.
"I think Dwane would give me cute babies." She pulled up a picture of her as a child. "Now I just need one of him so I can enter them in this machine..."
