The thrill of the hunt had dulled for him over the years.

Pha kept back the sigh, adjusting his hazer jacket as he tuned back into the head hazer from last year's speech. Some of the freshmen this year were being stubborn and not showing up for Sotus. It wouldn't be a problem, if one of them weren't Forth's own little brother - Forth being the second year hazing leader, and a pain in Pha's ass.

Why did Pha switch from medical to engineering again?

Ah, that's right. He wanted to be different from his father and mother. In fact, he wanted to be different from his whole damn doctor family. Nearly every single one of them were doctors, and it annoyed Pha that they had expected him to be one like part of a matched set, and were actually shocked when he'd announced he was doing the interview for engineering! It was like none of them remembered he had a mind of his own.

"Doing okay?"

Pha grunted lowly in response to his friend's question. Cross was the only true friend he had here, and the beta to Pha's alpha. Being a shapeshifter wolf sucked when in a school chockfull of puny humans. It was aggravating. But Pha had forced himself to apply to Kantaphat because that's where his parents had gone, and he needed to soften the blow of not being a doctor somehow.

As he was thinking before, the thrill of the hunt was almost gone. Nobody interested him. The girls were either boring humans, greedy wolves, or distrustful cats. Yes, even the cat shifter community had members attending here, the most obvious one being Kit, a second year from the Med Faculty.

Of course, Kit wasn't like the rest of his family. He liked Pha and followed him as if a wolf himself. Pha knew it was because he'd defended Kit back in high school from some rogue wolves, ganging up on tiny, vulnerable Kit, and Pha would never stand for bullying. So he chased the wolves away and sniffed Kit over to make sure he had no hidden injuries.

Kit had attached himself to Pha after that, the only loyal being to him not a wolf. It was quite the ego boost.

An addition to Kit came the very human and very annoying Beam, Kit's best friend. Beam was one of the humans that didn't care he was friends with shifters. To him, they were still people, and he liked them, so he didn't care if they could change their forms or not. It still unnerved Pha when he stumbled across Kit curled up in his cat form on Beam's lap, Beam stroking him softly and humming an odd tune under his breath.

Weird.

Finally, the meeting was done, and Pha dragged Cross out of there, needing fresh air and sun. Being inside for hours each day did not sit well with his wolf nature. Horrible thing about it this year, this was only the third day of the term. How was he going to survive the following months?? Especially with-

"Can you believe they're starting the Moon and Star practice today?" Cross spoke Pha's thoughts. He was just as grumpy about the competition as Pha was.

"I wish they'd do away with it," Pha growled, eyes flashing gold for a moment. Then he calmed and sighed. "And because Forth doesn't want to mentor this year's engineering Moon, I have to do it."

"Why you? You're his senior. Make him do it, alpha."

Pha raised an eyebrow. "I would if it were possible. But Forth has some family obligations getting in the way, and he can't be there all the time. So I reluctantly agreed to mentor this..." Pha frowned, trying to remember the name of the freshman he'd be looking after. "Ming?"

"Oh, you mean that Daichapanya heir? Good luck with him. I hear he's a real ladies man, and thinks he's funny."

"Brilliant," Pha huffed. "Another Can. Just what we needed." Not.
