"Don't look now, but I think a certain senior alpha wants to murder me for touching you," Ming said, all too amused about the situation at hand.
The small surge of hope made Yo's heart skip a beat before he could squash everything. The cat community never mated with wolves. Never. Yo's mom had been a cat, and so was his dad. And Yo didn't see how he could possibly entice a wolf into courting him, let alone think about claiming him.
Yo glared at Ming, shrugging so his friend's hand fell down. "Shut up. You're imagining things."
Ming sniffed the air. "Nope. There's an angry alpha in the room, and it sure isn't me. The only shifters in here are you, me and P'Phana..." Ming trailed off, his eyes going unfocused as he tuned into something Yo couldn't hear or see.
"What's wrong?" Yo glanced around. All he could see were the humans and the alpha wolf. "What is it you're sensing?"
"Well, you're not the only cat shifter here, that's for sure," Ming finally said, snapping out of whatever trance he'd been in and smirking over at the doors.
Yo turned in time to see two guys walking inside, heading straight for Phana. His heart sank when the copper-haired one of the two jumped at Phana, and the alpha wolf easily caught him, allowing the smaller male to scent him before setting him back down.
"Come on," Ming nudged Yo's arm. "Let's get closer and hear what they say."
"Ming!"
But Ming was already inching towards the front, intent on finding out what the three were talking about. Yo followed reluctantly. He scented the air, and realized the black-haired boy that had walked in was pure human. Yo's cat, a Savannah Cat with a beautiful coat of fur, pricked its ears and tuned into the conversation for him.
"--I'm just saying, if you need me to, I'll tell them to back off," the wolf rumbled softly, ruffling the copper-haired boy's hair with fond affection.
Yo wanted to claw his face off.
"Beam handled it before I could even think," the smaller one admitted, scrunching his nose at the black-haired boy - Beam.
Beam smirked. "Imagine that, a human protecting a shifter. Alert the papers."
"Shut up."
"Make me, Kitty."
"Damn you, my name is Kit! Not Kitty!"
"Aw," Beam crooned teasingly, ducking behind Phana when Kit took a swipe at him. "But you're such a cute kitty!"
"Cute my ass!" Kit hissed, advancing on Beam as the other ran away laughing. "Pha!"
Phana looked up at the ceiling as if to say 'Why me?' and said, "Beam, we talked about this. Teasing a shifter for for their features is like teasing a human for a deformed limb. It's not done. Drop it."
Beam's eyes still danced merrily as he walked back. "Sorry, Kit."
Kit narrowed his eyes. "No you're not. Liar."
"Knock it off, you two." The wolf sighed. Then his dark eyes landed on Yo.
Yo froze with a spike of fear. What if the alpha got angry because Yo was eavesdropping?? How the hell did one placate an alpha wolf, anyway??
"You there, what's your name."
Yo blinked. He pointed at himself. "Me?"
Beam nudged Kit's arm, grinning for some unknown reason. Kit was grinning with him. Both looked at Pha.
"Am I looking at anyone else in the room?" Pha's tone was dry. "Your name, please."
"I-I'm Wayo. Yo for short," Yo stammered out. He could feel his face heating up in embarrassment.
