Mary was very lonely. She hardly had any friends. She wanted a companion. She was down in the dumps, to say the least. She stared out her bedroom window, and saw a girl walking her dog. Then, an idea came to her.
"A dog!" she exclaimed, snapping her finger. "I should get a dog, to be my best friend! Then, I won't be lonely, anymore!"
However, her parents told her before, that they couldn't have a dog. Dogs were a big responsibility. Cleaning up after it, feeding it, and making sure, it doesn't go into other people's yards. Mary had to ask anyway. "Mom, can I have a dog, please?" she asked.
"No, we cannot have a dog, Mary," was her mother's answer.
"I'll promise to take care of it, and take it on a walk!" insisted Mary.
"If we keep a dog, it will mess up the furniture!" said her mother. "No dogs."
Mary felt sad, after hearing her mother's response. She didn't want to be lonely, anymore. All she wanted was a best friend. Someone to play with, and cuddle with. But, there was one thing she could do.
Make up an imaginary dog!
And, she did!
