I turned around to see who it was. It was Captain Levi.
"Yeah, Its pretty much my only bad habit." I gazed sadly at the lit end of the cigarette and took a drag.
"Well unfortunately its one of many for me." My head turned to stare at Levi as he proceeded to take out a similar box to mine. I was honestly shocked, he never came across to me as someone who would smoke. Then again I don't really come across as someone who would either.
"Can I borrow the lighter?" I snapped out of my trance and passed him the lighter.
"Sure, here." I continued to stare at him every so often. He seemed like such a intimidating character but once your alone with him he loosens up. Almost like he wears a mask so people believe he is as strong as the rumours perceive him to be.
I took one last drag and snuffed out the butt with my shoe.
"Well Captain I bid you a good evening." I smiled and walked back to where Hange was.
"Wait." I turned at his voice a soft hum left my lips.
"Pick it up." The short man was staring angrily at the cigarette butt on the floor as if it was an insect trying to attack him. I couldn't help but laugh a little, this only made him more annoyed.
"Why are you laughing?"
"Sorry sir. I'll pick it up." I stopped laughing and just smiled at him as I picked the butt up and walked towards the door. I dropped the butt in the bin and walked back to Hange's room.
"Sorry to keep you waiting." I said opening the door.
"Its alright." They smiled as I sat down on one of the chairs.
"So, If I remember rightly you wanted to talk?" I got a nod of approval. "Alrighty then, take it away." I gave her a soft reassuring smile.
"I guess I'll start from the beginning. Do you remember the mission around 2 years ago, the one where we lost almost all of our comrades?" I nodded.
"Well, included in the casualties was my entire squad. I sent them all to their deaths, I killed them all." I could see tears begin to form in their eyes.
"That night when we came back I remembered one of my squad kept a bottle of wine under his bunk. So I drunk it in both his and all the others memory. Once I finished the bottle I began to feel like all the pain and saddened emotions fade, I craved more. I ended up getting through around 3 bottles of wine that night. I eventually passes out on Levi's desk and threw up on him the next morning." They laughed a little at the memory.
"The next night once everyone had gone to bed and I was left alone with my thoughts all the unwanted thoughts and emotions came flooding back. So I turned to what I knew worked. Its been like that ever since, I don't drink every night but its become really hard to go without it for more than three days. I know I've got an issue but... well I just cant bring myself to help myself." They sighed and dropped their head into their hands.
"Its ok. I know how you feel-" I was cut off by Hange standing up and raising their voice.
"How could you?! Your not me you don't have to live with this!"
"I'm not you but trust me I know-"
"No! You don't-"
"Yes, I do!" I slammed the box of cigarettes on the desk next to Hange. Their eyes widened and quickly glanced between me and the box repeatedly.
"There, now do you believe me?" I sighed loudly and walked quickly out of the room, forgetting about the box I'd just left on Hange's desk.
