It was the late hours of the day, and I was slowly starting to wake up. I turned over in the set of strong arms that held me, to come face to face with a still sleeping Mateo. His face was relaxed, while his hair was wild. His locks of caramel were standing up on edge from sleep and me continuously running my hands through it. I traced my fingers along his jaw slowly, while just admiring his peaceful, childlike face. It was like there was no care in the world when it came to seeing Mateo at peace. I smiled lightly before kissing his nose and slipping out of bed. I went into the bathroom, planning to have a relaxing bath to help my sore muscles, but those plans changed when a phone sounded through the room.
I quickly went and answered the phone, not wanting Mateo to wake up. "Hello, Alpha Female Cygnus speaking."
I only heard breathing from the other side of the line. Until a deep gravely voice sounded through the phone. "Heather.... You have until your twenty-fifth birthday to find me.... To kill me.... To fulfill the prophecy.... I will give you until the twentieth anniversary of your packs slaughter.... Before I come for you and your new family.... Know this Heather.... and this is the only hint I'm giving to you.... When the sun sets on the twenty-fourth day, of your twenty-fifth, and the snow has begun to melt, I will travel through the clearing path, only to stay at the edge of your new home.... You will find me there, in the place where it all started. But find me before then, where the river meets the sky, then you can fight me before the year is ny...."
I was shaking from fear, trying to write all this down. I mustered up some courage to ask the one thing that could be the most important. "Who are you?"
The voice drawled out again. "I am the man your uncle called brother, baby beta." Then he clicked off and I dropped the receiver. Spots started to form in my vision. Everything around me started to slowly fade. I knew I was heading to the floor in that moment. But before I even collided, a set of arms had caught me. I tried to regain focus, but it was to no avail. Once I hit the soft covers of my bed, I passed out.
Memories flashed through my dark mind. Each memory had three figures standing together. One was always my uncle, and another my father. But the third figure was always of a short, buff man. His hair was white as snow, yet he didn't look any older than my father. One memory stuck out as it started to play.
It was my fourth birthday. A small party was being held at my uncles house. I was running around with the other kids. I was wearing a blue plaid shirt, overalls and no shoes. I was getting tired of running, so I decided to go see my uncle. He was talking with my dad and another man. I think it was his second in command. I kept running until I was close enough to jump on him. "Pup Pounce!" I yelled, catching him off guard. We fell to the ground laughing, while everyone laughed around us too. I was then picked up my foreign hands, but a voice that I vaguely recognized. "Whoa there baby beta. If your that sneaky now, we may never find you in the future." A chorus of 'yups' sounded after him. Then my dad plucked me out of the mans arm while saying "Gamma Ray is right sweet pea. You'll be even better at sneaking out of the house when your a teen now. Better than me even."
All of a sudden I'm pulled out of the memory. Only two things being recited over and over. Baby Beta and Gamma Ray. Suddenly I bolt up from my spot on the bed. I screamed so loud, that I bet even the dead could hear it. I held my head in my hands, frustrated with the situation. This memory just gave me answers that terrified me. The only gamma in history turned rogue. He murdered my pack, and is now out to finish me.
A hand touched my arm, but it only made me jump out of my skin. I backed away from the mystery person, basically falling off the bed in fear that they will hurt me. I didn't even dare to opens my eyes. "Heather, honey, its okay. Its only me." A voice said. I cracked open my left eye, looking toward the bed. My eye landed on the person who spoke, and I sighed in relief. I opened both of my eyes, staring at Mateo. Then I broke down, not being able to hold anything in anymore. Mateo picked me up off the floor and held me close on the bed until I calmed down. it didn't take long as I felt safe in his arms.
"Heather. Tell me what happened. Please." Mateo begged softly. I turned in his arms to face him. I took a deep breath and tried to speak as slow as possible.
"Iknowwhothemanonthephoneis.HisnameisRay,theGammaofEridanusPack.Hekilledmypackbygoingrogue.Hegavemeahintofwheretofindhimbeforemy25thbirthday,butIdon'tknowwherehe'stalkingabout." Mateo looked at me like I had grown two heads. I smacked my forehead and groaned. I spoke to fast like a crazy person. Okay, I guess I have to repeat myself.
I took another deep breath and opened my mouth again. "I know who the man on the phone is. His name is Ray, the Gamma of Eridanus Pack. He killed my pack by going rogue. He gave me a hint of where to find him before my 25th birthday, but I don't know where he's talking about."
Mateo stared at me with wide eyes. His mouth flapped open and closed like a fish out of water. Still stunned by my information, he spoke. "Did Ray have a mate before he went rogue?" Now it was my turn to be stunned. I thought about it for a bit, sifting through my memories of my mother. I always came back to Friday nights of my mom having a woman over. She would always have her son with her, so I played with him every Friday. When I went into the kitchen it would always be when my mom would say her name. Then it clicked.
"Yeah he did. Her name was Emily Spruce. She never took his last name. They had a son named Ryker." I said. His eyes got bigger before he ran out the door, calling for his beta, better yet, his uncle. Now I feel terrible, because he ran out on me, not explaining what was happening. Oh how I wish this day would have gone better.
