Mateo was in a state of panic. Heather had just passed out and he didn't know what to do. They had just received some exciting news, but instead of feeling happy, he felt like he had failed in getting her better. He had worked so hard to see her awake again. The doctor touched his shoulder and said, "Alpha, she will be alright. Her body is under an enormous amount of stress and learning this good news sent her body into overdrive again." The doctor's explanation made Mateo feel a bit better, but not entirely. He decided to sit back down at his makeshift desk, hoping that work would distract him until his gem-eyed beauty woke up once more. On top of his duties as alpha, Mateo has not left his mate's side. He wasn't going to leave her side now either, ever. Knowing that he has a pup on the way already made him protective. And with this impending war between Heather and her uncle's asshole of a gamma, it wasn't helping anything. The construction at Eridanus Pack has even been slowed to a halt because of Heather's accident. That wasn't her fault, she never wanted to get hurt. But his mother, who had some sort of vendetta against her, really threw a wrench in her plans. And her accomplices didn't help either.
Hours had passed by now. Mateo had to leave twice because of unexpected meetings. At that time Heather was still sleeping but was no longer on her back. She had moved onto her right side, sighing in relief. Mateo was by her side when this happened, and thought she was waking, but only became disappointed. He missed his mate, and only wanted her to wake. He wanted to hear her talk again. To rejoice in learning that they would be parents. To finally take her home and have her rest in any room she wanted to be in. Feed her any food she wanted, like her favorite chicken meal, or a nice bowl of soup with focaccia bread and spinach dip. Anything she wanted, he would be happy to give her. Even to just hold her in his arms, he would rejoice. They may not get along most of the time, but Mateo was starting to admit that he may be..... falling in love with this woman. She somehow became his day, evening, and night in such a short period of time. Without her, it's just darkness with the faintest spark of stars, but not the familiar shine.
The time was passing by quickly, Mateo was stuck in his work as he sat by Heather. In the two hours that had passed, Mateo made many phone calls. He called up every master carpenter and builder that was on the list for rebuilding Eridanus. He commanded them to get back to work, that the days of rest and praying were over. It was time to get back on track. He even tasked one of the more experienced cleaners with going through the house and finding any baby toy, crib or old article they could. He wanted his pup to sleep in or have items from both its homes. And he also wanted to bring home here for Heather, so she didn't have to feel like where she came from didn't belong or wasn't allowed in his house. It was just as much hers as it was his now.
It was now 10 pm. Heather had woken up just long enough to eat some thin soup and drink some water. She tried to stay up longer to talk, but she was exhausted. Healing was taking a lot out of her, but at least she was accepting food now. She even tried to tell me to go home. Like that was going to happen. My home was here in the hospital, not in a cold and lonely bed. I did tell her I was leaving after she fell asleep. I needed to deal with something now that she was finally on the up and up of recovery. She fell asleep not long after that. I waited about an hour before leaving her side. Now, I found myself walking towards the secure holding cells. The ones we hold our most dangerous criminals, and now, my mother.
Attempted murder does not get taken lightly, especially in regards to the Alpha family. Mother knew this, and didn't care. She tried killing my mate, and unbeknownst to her, her grandchild as well. It was time to reap punishment. One she can't even begin to image was going to happen to her. Execution was too good for my mother. Banishment however, as well as the removal of her wolf, now that terrifies her. I put her banishment on hold, as I wanted her to know the true meaning of failure. I stood before her cell door. I slammed it open, not caring if she was sleeping. "Hello mother." I said tauntingly. It took her some time to register that it was me standing in front of her. But once she recognized me, the fear became evident on her face.
"The time has come to reap what you had tried to sew. Your banishment and wolf removal have been scheduled for tomorrow morning. Heather is recovering. She has finally awoken after two long weeks, no thanks to you." I turned around walking back to the door. "Have fun not getting to know your grandchild you tried to kill." I said over my shoulder as I slammed her cell shut, locking it for the final time. My mother screamed in agony. She knew this day was coming, but I believe she was screaming because she lost the chance of being a grandparent. That was her fault and hers alone. It's too late to act like the victim after being the criminal. I walked away after that. Back to my mate. I did my duty as Alpha, now I'm going to do my duty as husband. First step, getting her home.
