Chapter 23: Endorphins

Dr. Jillian Klairo Esperansa

"Ako si Dr. Beronda. The senior chief resident here at Unang Kalinga Healing Center. It is my responsibility to show the newbies around. So, Follow me."

Bukod sa amin ni Creed ay may apat pang intern din ang nakasunod sa doctor. She is a short woman with long hair and tanned skin. Nakasuot siya ng white coat at light blue na scrubs indicating that she is still a resident like us...but the difference is, she is our senior and we are basically freshmen. We were all walking in sync on the hallway. We pass by the rooms and some nurses and regular people who's probably a family member for someone who's admitted here.

"Clear out the way, emergency!"

Napatingin naman kami sa paparating na gurney. Tulak-tulak iyon ng isang hospital staff. May babaeng doctor na nasa ibabaw noong pasyente. She was straddling him as she pumped the ambu-bag so the patient would stay alive.

"Damn," Bulong ni Creed.

Yup, damn, may plate number na nakasaksak sa dibdib noong pasyente, may dugo ang whitecoat noong doctor. The patient is a male and his shirt was soaked with blood.

"Kids don't worry you'll see a lot of worse stuff, now," Dr. Beronda sarcastically said and snapped her finger. "Attention to me."

Bumaling naman kami sa kanya.

"So, this is the on call room." She opened the door. Sumalubong sa amin ang isang may katamtamang kalakihang kwarto. May tatlong double deck na kama. Isa sa gitna, maroon din sa kanan at kaliwa.

"Ano ulit to?" She asked.

"On call room." Halo sabay-sabay naming sagot.

"Yes, keep that in your mind, always." She eyed us for a moment. "Some residents and even attendings think that this is a motel room to take their indiscretions."

Sandali naman kaming nagkatinginan ni Creed. We proceeded to follow her again, she showed us radiology, CT, ECG, and other scans, even the trauma center sa lobby, and the whole surgical floor.

"Now, this is the surgery board. As you can see, there are seven names there. They are the attending Doctors of each department here...you will meet them soon...and that sums all your tour, now, we're back to business." Bumaba ang tingin niya sa hawak niyang clipboard. "Llarena, you're with Dr. Añonuevo, chief of Plastics....Esperensa, you're on Pediatrics with Dr. Alcazar."

"Yes." I whispered.

He smiled at me, he knew I loved Peds.

"Del Russo..."

"Please be Cardio." Bulong niya.

"Neurosurgery with Dr. Perez.."

Tumango naman si Creed.

"Yes, Dr."

He squeezed my hand before we separated and went to the pediatrics wing. Ang unang sumalubong sa akin ay ang mga cute animal designs on sa main desk. May babaeng nakatayo sa may harap ng desk, may kausap siyang isang nurse.

She beamed when she saw me. Nakasuot siya ng dark blue na scrubs at may suot din siyang puting mahabang white coat. That's another thing that I learned. Your rank in the hospital is determined by how long your coat is. Hanggang tuhod ang kanya kaya naman alam kong siya ang Attending.

"Dr. Esperansa! You must be the baby resident." Masaya siyang bati. She's very beautiful. She has ivory skin, dark colored eyes, short bob haircut, a bright smile on her plump lips. May baby giraffe na clip ang dulo ng stethoscope niya.
