y/n's pov

i walked into school, feeling equally as tired as yesterday. i let my feet drag themselves to my locker. when i got to my locker, i noticed that the envelope i left within one of the slits of my locker was gone. someone took it. hopefully it was my secret admirer. i smiled at the thought, spinning the wheel of the combination lock and opening my locker to confirm that the slit is indeed empty, also looking down at my shoes and the floor to check for any more letters. there was none. so someone has their hands on my letter now.

yesterday, i figured out a way to get my letter to my admirer. from this time, it's been a day since the first letter from anonymous trickled through my locker. i wanted to write back to them, but i didn't know where to send the letter. however, when i went to my locker and saw the corner of what looked like a small, white card sticking out from the locker's slit, i recognized it as another envelope with a letter in it, and i was correct. the letter was basically checking up on me, asking if i was well, reminding me to stay hydrated and eat meals throughout the day.

i smiled at the short yet sweet reminders written on it until a light bulb went off in my head: if my admirer knows where my locker is and this is how they send letters, maybe i could send one through my locker as well. so i took out the envelope from my bag containing my letter, my response i wrote last night, and carefully placed it on the same slit my admirer's letter was in. i had to rewrite what i wrote on the front of the envelope in a certain way so the person passing by can see who the letter is for as it slightly protruded out from underneath the slit of my locker.

dear anonymous,

hello! i received your letter about me and i'm quite moved and intrigued. i'm very surprised that you know how to write in y/o/l. i didn't know someone else in our school was fluent in it (i'm assuming you are fluent unless you're using a translator or taking the elective. however, your words in y/o/l are very well-written. there are some grammatical errors here and there but it's perfectly fine. i still understand what you're saying).

i have some questions for you because i'm interested in getting to know you. i don't think you'd reveal your identity to me so quickly and i completely understand and accept your decision to remain anonymous. if you don't want to answer these questions, just let me know. but i'd certainly like to talk about some type of topic with you. :)

1. how do you know y/o/l and can you speak it?
2. gender?
3. favorite food?
4. strongest subject in school? if any? or maybe what subject would you like to get better at?
5. favorite places to travel or want to go to?

nate's pov

i sat there, feeling a bit dumbfounded but very happy. my heart thumped at the letter in my hand. they actually responded! i couldn't believe it, marveling at their handwriting and fluently written y/o/l on the paper. as i read it over and over to myself in the middle of the library, i was able to successfully translate most sentences on my own, understanding the context of what they were saying. but there were a few words that looked new to me and some grammatical concepts i haven't learned yet that threw me off. i'll need to properly translate this later.

yesterday morning when i checked up on y/n to see if they received my second letter, i noticed that they were putting an envelope in the slit of their locker as i walked by. when i got a glimpse of what the front of the envelope said, i saw one word in y/o/l to know that the letter was meant for me: anonymous. my heart raced and a nervous lump began to form in my throat, knowing i had to go back to their locker and check the letter at some point.

i never expected this at all but everything seemed to work in my favor. it was the next day and i decided not to send any letters to see what their reaction would be. but indeed, they sent one back, and that was enough to make me smile.

"hey, dude, ready to go?" i was snapped out of my trance by my friend, looking up at them to hear what they were saying. "the bell's about to ring." i nodded, carefully folding the letter back into the envelope and slipping it into my backpack. "what's that? you got a letter or something?" my friend motioned towards the envelope i put away in my backpack. i shook my head at them. "it's not important. something for sports." i made up an excuse as they brushed it off. when they mentioned the letter, i took a mental note to write another letter to respond to y/n, hopefully finishing it by the end of lunch time.

once the bell rang, my friend and i got up from our seats, exiting the library. my stomach started to feel warm as i realized that my next class is my one class with y/n.

y/n's pov

i made it to class on time, walking behind someone until they walked to their seat. i sat in my seat, took out my school supplies, and listened as the teacher talked about today's lesson and took attendance. i quietly played around with the pencil in my hand as the lesson strained on until the teacher announced that there's partner work. great. i barely know anyone in this class.

the teacher unfortunately chose the partners. i felt a bit anxious as my name was called, standing up and waking up to the desk to receive my worksheet, waiting for the second name of my partner to be called. "nate jacobs." i turned slightly to glance at the figure who was standing up and walking towards the teacher's desk, standing beside me to receive his worksheet as well.

when i looked at him, i felt a bit warm inside. he looked remarkably attractive with chocolate brown eyes and dark, slick back hair. the way his school uniform accentuated his broad shoulders and tall stature all the more made him seem intimidating height wise as he easily towered over me, my head reaching his chest.

"do you know what you two are doing?" we both nodded at the teacher's question before being sent off. nate looked down at me and shot me a sweet smile. "wanna work by my desk?" he offered. "sure." i slightly perked up, matching his soft, reassuring aura and following him to where he sat. i sat next to him and pulled the desk closer to his, his broad shoulder now adjacent to my skinny arm. he seemed to be more reserved by the way he spoke, using a very gentle tone, making sure his words sounded precise and well-received, like a mature gentleman, but he also didn't mind taking charge in the work we were doing. despite his giant-like stature that provided an intimidation factor, nate was actually very friendly and his jawline made me blush a bit.

it was actually considerably comfortable working with him. we got our work done early and we continued to crack jokes here and there, catching on to our humors perfectly. he kept smiling and paying so much attention to me and i found it really charming.

we started to drift into random conversations, getting to know each other until the teacher announced that the time was up. we were instructed to migrate away from our temporary partners and back to our seats if we weren't there already. nate and i looked at each other and exchanged slightly bummed out expressions. he was a truly nice guy and very chill. it was admittedly calming talking to him.

"hey, next time we're able to choose partners, let's work together again." he said as i stood up to move the desk back where it was. i agreed with him, nodding before saying goodbye.
