Longingly, I watched my friends leave the Hogwarts grounds to get to Hogsmeade that Saturday; the group laughing and mocking me for having to stay behind as I sent a middle finger their way and turned around.

A muffled sigh left my lips, eyes closed for a second as I made my way to McGonagall's classroom. A hand on either of my shoulders making my eyes snap open as I froze in my steps.

"I'm sure there's a way I can sneak you out with me," Kai teased, head tilted as he tugged me to the side of the corridor by my robes, waving towards his friends to tell them to go on.

I rolled my eyes, head falling to the side with yet another sigh, a small smile on my lips. Leaning against the wall with my right shoulder casually, I crossed my arms in front of my chest. "How I wish I could take you up on that offer," I shrugged, the playful pout on my lips making his twitch upwards in amusement.

"Oh, trust me, I know," He huffed, leaning against the stone as well, his back against it as he let his head fall to the side to look at me—a smirk playing on his lips as he ruffled a hand through his hair. "I'm sure there's a way I can convince McGonagall to reschedule," He suggested, head turning away from me again. "She likes me."

"That desperate, hm?" I snorted in amusement, watching him roll his eyes at the words.

"Trying to do you a favour here, Hayes—"

"Oh, cut it," I waved him off quickly. "Trying to do yourself a favour," I corrected. "You keep seeming to confuse the two." A wide grin on my face as he looked back at me, he shook his head playfully.

"It's not like you wouldn't benefit from it," He cleared up with a brow quirked, proud of the double meaning his words carried; the certain gleam in his eyes the only thing that revealed what he actually meant.

A singular, low laugh escaped my lips, hand ruffling through my own hair once. "No, trust me," I mused. "I would definitely benefit."

Pushing myself off the wall, I buried my hands in my pockets. "Anyway," I snapped him out of his thoughts, a growing smirk on both his face and mine. "I'd rather just get this detention over with now," I explained. "Because, contrary to you, McGonagall doesn't like me. So, I doubt she'd allow it either way."

He shrugged, mirroring my gesture and standing up straight, gaze set into the direction his friends left in. "Your loss, cariño," He muttered, breath tickling my ear as he walked past me casually.

Turning for my eyes to follow him leisurely walking out of the castle, my voice beamed through the empty entrance. "Your loss," I corrected, shaking my head at his words before watching him wave me off without ever turning around.

Any hint of amusement in my features was blown out of them the second I entered the empty classroom, slumping myself into one of the seats, habitually picking one in the back.

When I registered footsteps, I didn't bother turning around to greet the professor walking in. Though, I was slightly suspicious about the missing sound of her heels against the stone floor, footsteps lighter than I expected.

I only turned my head when no one ended up walking to the front of the room and instead casually sat on the seat a few rows beside me.

"You've got to be fucking kidding me." The words slipped past my lips before I had the chance to decide against it, looking at Malfoy in disbelieve.

He sent me an annoyed look. "Trust me, I'd rather be here with anyone else," He spat, his head not even turning towards me.

I scoffed. "Call that karma— you're the reason I'm here in the first place, you bloody idiot." Eyes diverting in sheer frustration. Though, I did catch the sly smirk spreading across his lips.

"Now, that was absolutely worth it," He said. "Thank you for reminding me."

Another groan escaped my mouth before the clacking of McGonagall's heel against the floors kept me from throwing another insult his way.

—————

"Did I mention that I cannot stand you, Malfoy?"

My hands had gone numb by now, scrubbing and polishing the metal of the candelabra for the past two hours. I hissed the words around an hour after McGonagall left the room, threatening us with extra hours if she found out we had used magic while she wasn't in the room.

"And I will find out," She had said before the door fell into its hinges behind her.

"Yet you still dream about me," He snickered in return, throwing the candlestick he was previously cleaning to his left, the motion followed by the clattering noise of it hitting the rest of them.

My brows shot up at his words, head lifting as I paused in my motion to look at him. "I do what, now?" I asked, humoured by the suggestion and confidence in his voice as the words left his mouth.

"You said it yourself," He shrugged, indifference in his eyes as they flickered over to me for a second. He grabbed the next candelabra from the pile sat between us.

"What?"

"You said you still have nightmares about that kiss," He explained, his lips tilting upwards into a slick smirk. "Though, if we're being honest here, Hayes; I doubt they're really nightmares, hm?"

A brow quirked, his eyes connected with mine when he looked at me.

I had a hard time stifling the laughter threatening to escape my mouth, though my lips did curl upwards into a wide grin. As I shook my head, I said, "The fact you even still remember that conversation speaks volumes, Malfoy."

He rolled his eyes at that, turning back towards his desk. "It's not my fault you have the memory of a bloody troll," He snickered. "And besides, you don't have to act like you weren't ogling me in transfigurations."

"You didn't think I'd miss Draco Malfoy getting a detention for not doing his homework, did you? Though I have to be honest, I expected more of a tantrum."

A singular, humourless laugh escaped his mouth at the words.

"Nonsense, we both know I quite literally caught you eye-fucking me—"

My hand tightening around the candelabrum in annoyance; I only saw one way to shut him up when I threw it at him, aiming right for his head and missing it by mere inches as he moved it out of the way.

"Careful, darling, you might hurt someone with that," He scoffed, wetting his lips and shaking his head as the metal fell right into the pile of cleaned candlesticks to his left.

"I was not eye-fucking," I clarified, ignoring his words as an annoyed huff escaped my lips.

It was then that the door swung open again, and I quickly busied myself with the remaining pieces of metal to clean. Though, instead of the silence that I expected to endure as soon as McGonagall came back, her voice beamed through the room.

"If you would come with me, Miss Hayes," She said, her voice calm but as demanding as ever before addressing the blonde next to me. "You're dismissed, Malfoy."

We both got up simultaneously, stretching my wrists and fingers as I furrowed my brows and turned towards the professor.

Why wasn't I dismissed?

Malfoy gave me a victorious smile as he casually passed the professor and me leaving the room without another word.

"Ma'am?" I questioned, confusion written all over my face as I looked at her. She gave me a single stern nod in return.

"Follow me, please."
