Blue skies, voices coming from all directions and a familiar road. Today Aesop was still walking to school with his best friend Eli. The young man was rather quiet by nature and spoke very little, but that didn't bother the one who had been by his side all these years.
As usual, it was Eli who did most of the talking as they both walked across the crosswalk. A mask covered half of Aesop's face, it wasn't that he had a phobia of bacteria or anything but he just felt more comfortable with it.
After about ten minutes, they finally arrived at the establishment where even more voices could be heard. It was quite a noisy place and Aesop was quite uncomfortable in this kind of environment but Eli's presence was comforting enough to calm him down. Ever since they were kids, Eli always helped Aesop no matter what situation he was in. Always cheerful and smiling.
It was that dazzling smile that had melted Aesop's marble heart.
Unfortunately, this moment of happiness did not last long. No sooner had they entered the building than Eli separated from him. Aesop, who had been staring at the ground until now, looked up to see a familiar figure, Gertrude. It was Eli's girlfriend.
He hadn't talked to her many times but he knew she was a nice girl and that she and Eli were a good fit. Eli turned back and waved at Aesop with a smile before heading off down a hallway with Gertrude. Both of them being in a different class.
"Another defeat, hm ?"
Aesop turned quickly to the voice behind him. That's when he saw Norton Campbell, probably his only other friend in the city. He didn't know when they started hanging out together, but the young man's presence could sometimes be quite helpful.
He was the only one who knew about his feelings for Eli. He was a little surprised when Aesop revealed this fact to him but the idea of one man liking another didn't bother him much. Apparently he too was in the same situation and he was even dating someone from another high school, it seemed his name was Luca or something like that.
"There's nothing to gain." replied Aesop coldly.
"Hm..."
Aesop sighed and then started walking back to his classroom with Norton who was also in the same class as him. He didn't know how long he had been feeling this way about Eli, but his feelings were definitely real and sometimes caused a slight pain in his chest.
Thus the day continued quietly, as usual Aesop was most of the time in the company of Norton. The two boys were not very talkative and Norton's comments could sometimes be a bit sharp but Aesop knew that deep down Norton was not a bad person.
Finally, the end of class came and it was time to go home. Norton had left directly when the last bell rang, he had an appointment scheduled. Aesop, on the other hand, slowly put his things away before leaving his classroom. He was walking down the hallway when something on the other side of the window caught his eye.
Maybe he shouldn't have given in to temptation because the pain he felt at that moment was like a thousand needles sticking into his heart.
