Chapter Six: Keep Your Eyes Open
Quinn moves his strong grip to my shoulders and holds me at arms length to examine me with an amused smirk. I roll my eyes at him and scowl, which I, in turn, receive a chuckle from him. His expression suddenly turns dark as he looks at my face, as if a dark cloud has suddenly passed over his head. His sudden change in mood catches me off guard and I feel a knot of fear begin to form in my stomach.
His right hand's grip on my shoulder releases and trails its way up to my face. He firmly grasps my chin and tilts my head to the side, and I have to try and keep my composure at his sudden touch. I watch as his eyes search the left side of my face. His jaw tightly clenches and his lips draw into a straight line. His eyes trail up my face until they reach my wide eyes. He jerks away from me suddenly, releasing his grip on my chin and shoulder. Though I now stand before him completely free, I can't seem to find any strength to move and flee.
He turns his back to me and runs a hand through his wavy locks angrily, before spinning around to face me once again. His wild eyes shock me and I let out a small gasp. He mumbles under his breath in a foreign language that I have never heard before while throwing his gaze to the ground in front of me. Though I'm not sure why, seeing him like this makes a ribbon of distress run through my blood, making it turn cold.
I've never seen Quinn actually angry until now, and I wish to never have to see it again. My other wish is that his dreadful mood isn't directed towards me.
"Who hit you?" he asks so quietly that I'm sure that if it wasn't for my keen hearing, I wouldn't have understood him. At his words, my body flinches as if I have been slapped again. His words confuse me and my emotions. I'm not sure whether to feel frightened or admiration towards his sudden care. The only emotion that I can decipher from the turmoil churning deep within me is initial shock.
Wait a second.
How does he know that I have been hit? Realization instantly dawns on me and I clearly understand why. The mark of the guard's anger across my face must not have faded due to my current condition. Though I have blocked out my intense hunger and thirst, I know that they have taken a toll on me, which as a result, makes my healing process more lethargic then ever.
I push away all the thoughts of my current health and direct them towards Thyrion. I still do not understand why he cares about how I am treated, especially after the way that he has treated me in the past. My only rational guess would be that his 'goods', meaning me, have been damaged and is affecting his precious paycheck.
Instead of dealing with my conflicting emotions, I find it easier to just block them out and stay silent. I shift uncomfortably as he lifts his gaze onto me once again. Just as he goes to demand me to tell him once more, an unexpected and most certainly unwelcomed guest appears.
The guard that had been sent to take me away suddenly appears, pulling my gaze from Thyrion and fastening it onto the guard. His pants echo through the tunnel of the staircase as he stops a couple of steps away from me when he spots Quinn. He quickly changes his demeanor and straightens his posture as if he wants to impress Quinn. I have to hold in a snort at the power Quinn holds over people.
