Your door opened into a narrow hallway, leading into darkness. My guess is that we'll be performing individual tasks which eventually lead to opening each other's doors. You continued walking, making sure to stay alert, who knows what this phase would throw at them.
Eventually, the hallway opened into a larger room, and you quickly took in the sight before you.
In the center of the room was a large pit, with 25 platforms spanning across the gap. Each looked to be about 12x12 squares, with around three feet of space between them, all sporting unique symbols on their surfaces.
You looked down at the space between two of the platforms and could see nothing but darkness below. Could probably assume whatever's at the bottom isn't good.
You examined the rest of the room to see if there was anything to aid you in this puzzle but saw nothing except a red button beside a closed door at the other side of the pit. That must be the button I have to press to open Hisoka's door, you thought, getting unlucky with your teammate for this one could be the end of you. You smiled slightly at the thought of Hisoka, I guess I got lucky, your smile turned into a frown, wait no, I'm supposed to be resisting my feelings towards him, why does he have to be so damn alluring!
You shook your head out of your thoughts and focused on the task at hand. Examining the different squares, you realized what the puzzle was implying and began using gyo.
A few select squares immediately started to glow. You smiled, so some of the platforms will leave you falling to your death while others serve as stepping stones, and to make the test easier for nen users, they've infused the correct squares with aura
At this realization, you effortlessly jumped across the gaps on nen-infused squares, quickly making it to the other side. Well, that was easy, you walked towards the button on the wall, only to be startled by the door next to it sliding open. Looks like he beat me to it. You pressed the red button before walking through the doorway.
"If all the rooms are that easy, I doubt this will be very interesting,~" Hisoka mused, as you both walked out of your respective doorways. "Hopefully we'll be met with some sort of challenge.~"
You smirked, "yeah no kidding."
You examined Hisoka out of the corner of your eye as he walked up to the next set of buttons, his muscular figure, sharp jawline, bright-soft looking hair, you couldn't help but yearn for his touch-
"Like what you see?~" Your eyes snapped up to his and heat overcame your face, "I- uh," you stuttered, "relax (Y/N),~" he cut you off, "I'm just toying with you.~" He winked and pressed the button to open your door. You pulled your hood more tightly over your face and quickly followed suit.
----------
You and Hisoka cleared the next few rooms with ease, all being some sort of puzzle or trap room which were easily doable using nen.
But as you and Hisoka came together before another room, you felt something. "I feel a presence up ahead," you said, focusing on the concentration of aura coming from the other side of your door, "we may finally get a challenge."
You looked over at Hisoka to see him smiling at his door, "I feel it too, finally, something to get excited about.~" He licked his lips and pressed his button, "let's see who awaits us.~"
After a few minutes of walking through your dark hallway, you finally entered the next room, and immediately noticed two differences. One was a man leaning against the wall several feet away from you. The other was the thick sheet of glass that made up the entire left wall. Through it, you could see Hisoka, a different man facing him, one sporting two big scars under his eyes, and holding two curved blades.
Hisoka noticed the glass wall too and glanced at you, giving you a small smile before focusing on his opponent. Well this will be interesting, you thought, guess I'll finally get to see him in action, his scuffle with the idiot examinees from earlier didn't count.
You turned to your opponent, as he pushed himself off from the wall, walking in front of you, but keeping a safe distance.
"So what?" You unclipped one of your whips from your side, holding it loosely in your hand. "Do I just have to defeat you?"
The man finally met your gaze, his eyes were grey and dull, but a spark of rage glowed within.
Your eyebrows furrowed, "did I do something to you?"
The man didn't answer right away, you took this time to take in his appearance. He was wearing a grey and blue samurai uniform, with wild brown hair, and a sheathed katana at his side. He was also young, around twenty, maybe younger.
"You took..." he mumbled darkly, "...everything from me."
You studied him, trying to remember if you'd seen him before, you didn't think so. Your eyes narrowed, "are you related to someone I've killed?"
His gaze locked onto you, and you were almost startled at the complete look of rage that burned in his eyes. "Yes, but I bet you don't even remember her name," he unsheathed his katana, "that's how killers do their jobs."
You're wrong, you thought, I remember all the names of the people I've killed, you faltered, at least, I did, before... Kiri's image came to mind. No! You shoved the memory back, this isn't the time.
"I'm sorry for your loss, but I only kill the people I deem as unfit to live."
His eyes somehow darkened even further, "so you don't know who I'm talking about, well, I'll walk you through it."
Your eyebrows furrowed, intrigued, but wary of his demeanor, you kept up your guard.
"My sister was taken from me three years ago," he started, "both of our parents were killed when she was taken and I just barely survived, so, naturally, I swore to find her as the only family I had left."
"I looked far and wide and eventually found her in the underground, being sold off with other girls to filthy men," his fists clenched, "I identified her buyer and located his mansion, but someone had beaten me to it." He emphasized the 'someone' as he looked at you.
"I arrived that night to see servants fleeing from the house, they yelled 'murderer! Murderer!' and I knew I was too late. I was about to run inside, to see if I could find her, but before I did, you came out." He started to pace back and forth as he continued his story, "and what were you carrying but a little girl, huddled in your arms like you were her savior, my sister."
At this point, you had started to realize who this man was, and dread was slowly creeping into you, overtaking your body.
He noticed your shocked expression and smiled evilly, "I'm guessing you know who I'm talking about based on your face, but I'll spell it out for you, my sister's name was Kiri."
