You woke up the next morning to the sound of bird songs echoing through the forest. Smiling, you looked at Hisoka, whose arms were resting loosely over your chest. His eyes were closed, a peaceful look on his face.
He's pretty cute when he sleeps. You smiled at your own thoughts and looked around, noticing that your surroundings were slightly different from the night before. You could still see the clearing but the two of you were off to the side, laying behind the cover of some large bushes. Hisoka must have carried me over here so we could both sleep and not worry about getting ambushed in the middle of the night.
You looked at him fondly, placing a soft kiss on his forehead before carefully unwinding his arms from your body and standing up, walking quietly into the trees.
You pulled out one of your kunai, It's about time I look for Killua.
----------
After a few hours of wandering, you finally found him.
You could feel his presence somewhere ahead of you, and activated your zetsu, just in case he'd miraculously learned nen in the past two years.
You jumped up into the branches and exited a denser part of the forest to find an open pathway below you, dark trees lining it on either side.
You quickly scanned the path, and that's when a bushel of white hair caught your eye. There you are Kill, you smiled and silently traversed the large branches around him.
As you maneuvered the trees around Killua, you studied him, he was walking nonchalantly, one hand shoved in his pocket, the other holding his skateboard, his usual stance.
He's still the same little boy I once knew. You gazed fondly at him and pulled out one of your whips, sorry about this bro, in the blink of an eye, the long tendril snaked past the trees, snatching Killua's tag and instantly returning to you like the band of a slingshot.
You didn't waste a second, the moment the tag reached your hand you took off through the trees, catch me if you can Kill.
You jumped from branch to branch, diving through leaves and shrubs in an attempt to either slow him down or throw him off, you knew he was chasing you, after all, he was the only one who could challenge you in a race.
----------
The ground flew past you in a blur as you ran, it had been about ten minutes since you'd taken Killuas tag, and you hadn't stopped.
At this point you had sensed him chasing you, he was about 50 yards away, but was slowly gaining.
I'm impressed, he's gotten quite strong, you glanced back, still not seeing him, but why is he even taking the hunter exam? The rest of the family must have noticed his potential by now, why would they let him leave?
Suddenly, the tree you were running on gave out under you.
Your eyes widened as you dropped to the ground, just barely managing to land on your feet.
An older man was standing next to the fallen tree, his foot lowering to the ground.
"Bodoro, isn't it?" The man nodded
"I'm guessing I'm your target."
He nodded again, giving you a cautious stare before falling into a stance.
You made no move to grab your weapons, "duck," you said.
Bodoro raised his eyebrows in confusion, and not a second later, his body fell to the ground.
Killua stood behind him, his left arm extending horizontally from his body, the stance of his signature chop.
"Thanks for not killing him."
Killua shoved both of his hands in his pockets and turned around, "I knew you wouldn't want me to."
He bent over Bodoro's body and pulled out a tag, "good thing he was my target, would have made this phase a lot harder," he said, eyeing his tag in your hand.
You smiled and slipped his tag in the pocket of your cloak, "I wasn't worried for a second Kill, you're more capable than most of the people on this island."
He smiled confidently, resting his arms above his head, "this exam's a cinch, I could pass with my eyes closed."
You let out a small laugh at his overconfidence and turned away, your smile fading. I shouldn't talk to him, I need to distance myself from the family, making contact with any of them will just make it all the more painful.
You began to walk away, "Don't tell the rest of the family about my whereabouts Killua." You stopped and turned your head slightly, "I don't want to be found."
"Wait." His voice stopped you in your tracks. You turned around to face him.
"Why did you leave?" He looked at you defiantly.
You kept your face passive, "It's for your own good Kill, trust me."
You turned back around.
"You didn't answer my question," Killua said.
This time you didn't turn. "There was someone I couldn't protect," you clenched your fists, speaking softly "because I wasn't strong enough."
"That's a lie."
Your eyes widened at his response, but you didn't move.
"There are some things you don't understand Kill-"
"SHUT UP!" His outburst silenced you, but you still didn't turn around, knowing your emotions were written all over your face.
"You're stronger than anyone I know, and it's not because of how fast you can run, or how many jobs you've completed." The sincerity in his voice made your eyes water, and you tried to hold back tears.
"Out of everyone in the family, you're the only one who understood there was more to life than killing." His voice broke, "the only one who believed I could be something other than a killer."
Tears began to stream down your cheeks as you thought of little Killua, how his face had beamed whenever you agreed to play with him.
"I just want to see the stars again."
~Flashback~
"He's supposed to be training (Y/N), you should know this."
You latched onto Illumi's arm "Yes I do know! But he was so eager to see the stars tonight and-"
Suddenly you were on the ground, your cheek red from where you had been hit. You looked up shocked, to see Illumi's black orbs staring down at you, not a single ounce of guilt or regret showing in his eyes.
"I trust you won't get in our way again."
He turned around and left the room, slamming the door shut behind him.
----- Back to Present -----
How could I have forgotten that? You gently touched your cheek and wiped away the tears.
"I'm sorry Killua." Before he could protest, you disappeared into the trees, leaving Killua staring after you, tears streaming down his cheeks, pain, and sorrow in his eyes.
