At the name, the whole world seemed to stop, and the small hope you had that this man was talking about someone else, vanished. You stared at him, mouth slightly hanging open as you thought back to that fateful day.
But the man wasn't done, "after I saw you take my sister, I tracked your movements, eventually finding the abandoned apartment building you stashed her in. The day I arrived, I watched as you went into the building. I was planning on waiting till nightfall, after you had left, to go in and take her away, but when I saw the look on your face when you came out a couple of hours later, I knew what you had done."
Horror coursed through you at his words, no, it can't be- "It was the face of a killer," he cut you out of your train of thought, "blank, emotionless, empty, you felt nothing as you killed her."
No, you thought desperately, no it's not true!
"I ran in, as soon as you had left, to find her tucked into a makeshift bed as if she was sleeping, she looked so peaceful." He looked wistfully past you at something you couldn't see. "In fact, I almost thought she was sleeping until I noticed the hole in her head." The sadness in his eyes turned to confusion, "that was the one part I couldn't piece together, why kill her so heartlessly and then go through all the trouble of cleaning up the blood and making her comfortable."
You didn't answer him, you were still frozen, you couldn't speak, you couldn't move, you couldn't breathe. "Oh well," he said, the rage in his eyes returning, "it doesn't matter, all that matters is that you took her from me." He raised his katana so it was pointed at you, "for the past two years, I've been preparing for this moment, now it's time you die."
If it wasn't for the knock on the glass to pull you from your thoughts, you may have let him kill you. You dragged your eyes from the man to the glass, seeing Hisoka standing on the other side. He had on a blank expression, but you could have sworn you saw a hint of concern in his eyes.
He tapped the glass again, gesturing from you to the man, implying for you to dispose of him already. You looked back at him, I couldn't protect her, it's- Illumi's black, dark eyes crossed your mind, feeling nothing, the eyes of a killer.
It's all Illumi's fault, rage began to flow through your body and you took a step forward, then stopped.
The rage had already begun to diminish, leaving you with crushing emptiness, your head pounding as the rage left your body, just like it had the moments after Kiri's death.
No, it's mine.
Images of the bright-eyed girl flashed through your mind, her brother hugging her tight, crying and laughing to finally be reunited with his last piece of home. She'd be alive right now, her brother would have protected her, they may have even let me visit. At the thought, a tear slid down your cheek.
The man began to run towards you, raising his katana as he ran, "Die!" he yelled. You took out one of your whips and activated your nen, swinging the long tendril towards him.
Before he could process what had happened, the whip had wrapped around his torso, stopping him in his tracks.
"You will sheathe your sword and let me pass," you said in a robotic voice. The rage from the man's eyes faded, and emptiness remained, a sign of your control. "I will sheathe my sword and let you pass." He did just that, putting away his sword, and resuming an upright position, like that of a soldier.
As you walked over to him, you lowered your hood, letting your (H/C) hair cascade around your shoulders. You wanted him to see you.
When you reached him, you placed your hand on his shoulder, "what is your name?" You asked him, knowing that although those under your control could not function from their own will, they were still consciously aware of their surroundings. "Haru," he replied emptily.
You smiled sadly and replied "I did not kill your sister Haru, although someone I thought I once knew did," your fists clenched, as an image of Illumi came to your mind, and the feeling of emptiness returned. You looked at him, tears sliding down your face. "I'm sorry for your loss Haru, I wasn't able to protect her, it's all my fault."
Although the emotionlessness in his eyes didn't change, you watched as a tear fell down Haru's face.
Your hand slipped away and you walked over to the already open door, an image of Kiri's lifeless body in your mind. Her once bright eyes, now dead, looking up into nothing.
I failed you, Kiri, you let your whip fall from Haru's body, as you pressed your button, and walked through the door.
----------
Hisoka stared at you as you entered the room, he could clearly tell you were disturbed, "want to talk about what happened in there?~"
You pulled your hood back up over your head, "No," you whispered quietly.
He studied you for a few moments, his face passive, giving away nothing.
Then slowly, he pressed his button and the door in front of you slid open.
