Smoke was circling all around the bodies that were laid out on the ground. Flames were blazing from the building that once stood in the lot. Sirens were blaring and voices were screaming from every angle, but everything sounded so far away with the ringing in her ears as she slowly lifted her head from the ground, taking in the chaos around her. As her blurry vision cleared, she saw the multiple bodies of her colleagues laid all around her, medics trying to save the ones worth saving. Which wasn't many. She slowly sat up and tried to take in the scene around her. What happened?
What went wrong?
How did this happen?
She managed to get herself to her knees and crawl towards the body of one of her fallen colleagues beside her. She placed her fingers on their neck, to find no pulse. Tears clouded her vision, running down her cheeks and mixing with the dirt that was dusted all over her body now. Everything felt as if it were a dream, or that life was in slow motion. Medics and agents running around in a frenzy, yelling orders to anyone in their path.
Her eyes roamed around from body to body laying on the ground surrounding her. Her ears were ringing as she staggered to her feet. The world around her spinning as she made it to a standing position. The fire still ablaze in the warehouse that was once standing. She couldn't believe her eyes, she didn't know what went wrong. The plan was full proof, everything should have worked out perfectly. No one was supposed to get hurt, she promised them everything was fine. How could this have happened.
"Amelia!"
Her name was called in the distance, lost in the ringing still present in her ears. Her hearing was slowly becoming clear again the longer she stood there.
"Amelia!" He called out again as he reached her, her senses returning to normal finally. "Amelia, are you hurt?"
"T-they're-" she muttered as she looked around again, running a hand along her forehead. Her thoughts were jumbled as nausea swept over her.
"Are you hurt?" He asked again. When she didn't respond, he grabbed her by her shoulders, "Amelia, look at me. What's the matter? Talk to me." Her teary eyes snapped up to his face, guilt overtaking her expression.
"I killed them."
