The sky was a beautiful shade of blue; her favorite she decided. The white snow fell perfectly at her feet. The frigid air caused her nose to turn bright red. Soft Christmas music could be heard in the background. As she looked around she saw dozens of people, couples bundled up in warm clothing and each other's arms. She smiled at a little girl dragging her parents to a Christmas shop. She made a mental note to visit there for decorations.
A soft breeze flew by and Y/n stuffed her glove-covered hands into the pocket of her beige coat. The coat that her boyfriend of 3 years, Mark, gave her for Christmas last year. She thought it was ugly at first, but she'll admit it grew on her. Looking at her watch, she breathes out a puff of air.
"He's supposed to be here by now. Where the hell is he?"
"Where the hell is who?" A voice whispered from behind her. She could recognize that voice anywhere. She turned around and greeted Mark with a big hug. He laughed at her excitement to see him. His little giggle restored the warmth to her body that the cold air took away. Y/n smiled softly at her boyfriend with sparkles in her eyes, Mark looking at her with the same amount of emotion. Anybody looking at the couple could see that they loved each other dearly.
"You, you dumbass," she punched his shoulder with a laugh. Which, in turn, caused Mark to laugh his ass off. Most people would think that his high-pitched laugh was noisy and annoying but she found it endearing. It was how she knew that he was really happy.
"I'm sorry I'm late darling. Got caught up with work," he spoke quietly, a complete 180 from how he was before, afraid for her reaction. And as he should be. She and Mark rarely fought but when they did it was most likely revolving around Mark's "job." Lee Mark, her cute and adorable boyfriend, is a part of the notorious mafia, NCT.
Y/n bit her tongue so as to not lash out at Mark. It"s Christmas Eve and she didn't want to fight. Not right now. "It's ok, babe. You're here now, so let's go shop!" Mark smiled at the girl's giddy expression, trailing behind her as she started to wander around the shops, a slight pep in her step. He just hoped that nothing would interfere with tomorrow's plans. She looked back at Mark, flashing him a bright, beautiful smile, before yelling at him to hurry up. He returned the smile, immediately running to his girlfriend's side.
"Ok, so what exactly does one need for a Christmas party?"
It's the next day and Y/n is in her room, pacing. Her best friend sits in front of her on the bed, watching her with a bored expression.
"What are you so worried about? You've thrown plenty of parties before, this one is going to be no different. Just relax and please for the love of God, stop pacing before you burn a hole into the floor."
She turned to glare at her friend, causing him to put his hands up in surrender. "It is going to be different Hyuck! My parents are in town and they're coming!" she cried out. Donghyuck just continued to look at her with a "so what" face, before saying just that. "So, Mark's gonna meet my parents. He's never met my parents before!" Now that got a reaction out of the boy.
"WHAT!?"
"Jeez, Hyuck. My ears are bleeding now, thanks."
"What the fuck do you mean, 'he's never met your parents'???"
"I mean exactly that. What are you not getting Haechan?"
"B-but, you guys have been dating for like a gazillion years. You're in love with each other! I'm pretty sure he's gonna propose to you soon." She resisted the urge to roll her eyes at the dramatic boy, instead, focusing on the last bit of his statement. Propose? Yea, right. He's too focused on his job for marriage. Or me.
Meanwhile
"Hello?"
"Mark. We've got new intel on the drug lord. Going to check it out this afternoon. You free?"
His first instinct was to say yes, but he hesitated as he remembered the party tonight. It won't take too long. We're just checking it out.
"Yea."
It's 12 a.m when Mark finally makes it to Y/n's apartment, his clothes tattered and in no way party-worthy, but he doesn't care. His only thought right now is his girlfriend and how mad she must be. Before he even moves to get his key, the door opens to reveal Donghyuck on his way out. Mark pales at the sight because if he's leaving, that means the party's over. He missed it. Haechan doesn't say a word to him, obviously angry at him. He just walks right past him, as if he wasn't even there.
The first thing Mark notices when he walks in is her small frame slumped against the back of the sofa. He could see tear streaks on her beautiful face and if it wasn't for the small hiccups coming from her mouth, he would've thought that she was sleeping. And if that wasn't enough evidence, the words that came from her mouth were.
"You're late," she croaked out, her voice scratchy from all the crying. "What was it this time? A drug deal? Gang fight? Did someone betray you and need to be executed?" Mark could hear the pain in her voice. It stopped him from responding. But she didn't like that. "WHAT MARK? WHAT MADE YOU MISS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DAYS OF MY LIFE?"
He looked at her with confusion and anger evident in his eyes. Was the Christmas party that important? We have one each year!? "Why are you getting so mad Y/n? You throw a party each year and I'm always at those, but the one time that I miss it you get all mad and shit!?" She flinched at the harsh tone but refused to back down.
"One." Her voice was quiet now, almost timid.
"What?"
"One. You've been to one of my Christmas parties. You didn't make it to any of the others. Guess I can add this to the Missed Christmases."
