Six of Crows Duology Fanfiction: Ketterdam's Secret

Chapter 9:

After Kaz had deemed the loft clear, Jesper and Kaz stood in the hallway, Wylan between them. Inej was off and they were discussing security of the house. 

"By the look on your face Kaz, I would have though you missed us. " Jesper teased as he wove his fingers though Wylan's. 

Wylan rolled his eyes and looked at Kaz:" Your welcome here anytime though, really. "

Kaz nodded replied:" As you are at the Slat. "

"Anyway, all sentiment aside, Wylan do you hire guards at all?"

"Not when he has the best sharpshooter here," Jesper teased. Then he sombered and said:" Nope, do we really need one though?"

Kaz leaned on his good leg and cane, "Not unless you want Doughty rummaging around in your stuff. "

"But we also have to make it look like we don't know..." Wylan trailed. 

He was worried about his mother's frail state. Mayra Hendricks had only started healing and healing was a slow fragile process. A relapse could mean all work was lost. 

Kaz caught the experssion on Wylan's face and said:" I'll have a few of the Dregs walk around this way back from the Crow Club. More gang presence means Doughty is more careful. "

Wylan nodded gratefully and Jesper grinned:" See? Everything going to be alright. "

Inej leaped from the high window sill into Kaz's office. After she had posted Rodrick to keep watch, she and Kaz and regrouped at the Slat. 

"What are you thinking, Kaz?" 

Kaz mumbled something about plans and looked up at the letter that Inej handed him. 

"Nina's arriving in lest than two days. Strumhond said that Genya Safin is staying to govern the country with the rest of his crew and that it would just be a short visit - he's hoping that the matter will be settled in a month. " 

Kaz nodded. Inej perched on his desk and peered at him. 

"What are you planning?" Kaz shook his head. The way to scheme was slowly, and to not be afraid to fall. 

"We have draft of Doughty's outcoming. He seems to be coming regularly, about just after midnight though the Geld Canal every week or so, on Fridays. "

Kaz nodded and Inej said:" Quite alot of nodding today, Kaz? I'm turning in. "
She smiled and Kaz exchanged good nights with her.
