Chapter 22:

"Well, well, Brekker. Seems like you've gotten hold of some ghosts tonight," Pekka Rollins said, his teeth baring.

The cold glint in Kaz's eyes was terrifying, even to Nikolai. The Darkling and him would a good match, Nikolai thought.
"No, Pekka Rollins. It is tonight, that you meet your ghosts. " Kaz bared his teeth right back.

Nikolai and Zoya hovered in front of them, their billowing white cloaks floating.

Pekka Rollins shrunk back, and Doughty whimpered.

Wylan's haunting flute solo wavered then died. The only sound was the quiet lapping of water and the wind that Zoya summoned, sending Pekka Rollins and Doughty hovering in the air.

Doughty was struggling like an angry butterfly.

"Use your knife! Idiot, its not real, just theater tricks" Pekka Rollins snarled, but Kaz interrupted.

"Non, not theater tricks. I control the demons and tonight, you will remember. "

Images of the last time he'd seen Kaz flashed through Pekka Rollin's mind. "If you harm-"

"Ah ah ah. Not yet. Later. " Kaz's crooked grin was laced with pleasure and delight. Doughty's knife flashed in the air.

"Put those down, if you want to live. " Kaz's demeanor told them that he was more than enough qualified to murder.

It was then, that Pekka Rollin's demeanor began to weaken.

"Let's go. " Kaz said, turning his back on the group. Zoya let the netted personals experience quite a bit of turbulence.

Inej continued her prayers. Nikolai and Zoya occasionally approached the floating net as ghosts.

Zoya almost snickered. Respect, she begrudgingly thought. Maybe Brekker could come to Ravaka as consultant. or very least an advisor. Not that she would listen to him.

Then she dropped Pekka Rollins and Doughty into the icy waters.

The reaction was instant. A squeal, a snicker and a cold grin.

Zoya let her tired arms drop them into the boat non so gently, then stood atop the stow, looking down at the prisoners', letting her ghostly robes float in the breeze.

In the boat was a little boy, with curly red hair, blindfolded and tied. Kaz smiled, while Inej's prayer for lost souls grew distant.
