Chapter Six: The Big Day
Today is the day. Today is actually the day. I’ve been waiting impatiently for the last three days for it to get here and it finally has. I think I’m going to explode from nerves.
I wake up at 6 a.m. and can’t go back to sleep. Deciding I have nothing better to do, I go outside for a while to sit on our balcony. I haven’t been up this early in months. After a while, I get bored and go inside to make coffee.
“Beep, beep, beep!” I hear Jessica’s alarm clock from my spot at the kitchen counter. I look at the small digital clock that was built in the front of the coffee maker. It reads 7:32 a.m. in blinking red lights.
After a few minutes, Jess walks into the kitchen while humming “What Makes You Beautiful.” Normally, she’d be a grumpy mess at this hour seeing as how she normally doesn’t wake until almost nine. Her anticipation for today’s events must have converted her to an early bird.
“What do you plan on wearing today? I’m thinking my leopard jeggings, a white scoop- neck tee, my denim long sleeve shirt, and white Converse.” She informs me.
“I considered my ripped skinnies and that black V-neck I got from Love Culture.” I say, “Actually, yeah. That’s what I’ll wear. I’ll pair it with my light blue Converse.”
“I can dig it.” Jess says, “Let’s go get ready then.”
And with that, I make my way to the shower as Jess walks off to her room to get her clothes together.

After we’ve showered, blow dried and dressed, Jess and I find ourselves standing in front of the bathroom mirror like that fateful night a few days ago. I take in my long blonde hair and my makeup. Jess really knows how to make it so that my blue eyes pop. As I had decided earlier, I wore my ripped skinny jeans, black V-neck, and Converse. Jess stayed true to her word too, and wore her leopard jeggings, a white scoop neck tee, her denim shirt, and white converse. Her hair was straight today and her makeup looked great. With a small nod at each other, we leave the bathroom.
“There’s only about five minutes left before the limo gets here.” Jess informs me. She keeps looking at her watch and pacing. I wish she would stop because she’s starting to make me nervous.
As soon as I have decided that I’m going to beat Jess in the head for pacing, our door buzzer rings. Jess stops dead in her tracks and stares at the door. Slowly, I get up from my chair and press the button on the intercom.
“Yes?” I ask into the small box. I glance at Jess as she walks up beside me.
“I’m here for a Ms. Audrey and a Ms. Jessica. Is this the correct residence?” The voice at the other end of the intercom sounds like an elderly man.
“Yes sir. This is the right place. We’ll be down in a moment” Jessica tells him in a flourish. She then turns her attention to me and says, “Well? What are you waiting on? Let’s go!”
Grabbing our bags, we run out the door. Once we reach the limo, I see the driver standing with the door open for us. The limo is one of those fancy, black Hummers. I can dig it, I think.
“Hello, ladies. My name is Harris and I’ll be your driver for the day.” The man says. As I had suspected, he was elderly. I think he was maybe mid-sixties. He was balding and had a small grey mustache. In a way he reminded me of my grandfather. Smiling at the resemblance, I nod hello and we enter the limo.

After hitting up every store in sight looking for the perfect out fit for tonight, we end up at a small boutique called The Feather Box. As soon as we walked in, I knew this would be the store to find our outfits. Every inch of space was consumed with clothing, jewelry, and shoes. It was absolutely amazing.
“O.M.G!” Jess yells out, “Skank, come look at this!”
I make my way over to wear she is. In front of her are two mannequins, fully dressed. From the look on Jessica’s face, I know that she plans for us to wear these outfits. I mean, I’m not complaining though; the clothes are seriously cute and look like our style.
On the first mannequin, it’s wearing light denim shorts and a deep blue racerback tank with “Everyone Has a Past” written on it in white letters. The other is wearing high waste denim shorts and a white off the shoulder Grateful Dead V-neck tee.
“I call dibs on the first mannequin!” I practically shout.
“I figured. Let’s go try these on.” Jess says.
As soon as I put the outfit on, I know that it was the one I want. When I tell Jess this, she agrees and says she wants to buy hers also. After we high five, we make our way to the register.
While waiting on Jess to pay for her things, I find a white beanie lying on one of the tables. Deciding that it would look cute with my outfit, I grab it and check out.
With our shopping complete, we head to the limo and make our way to the radio station. In the back of the limo, Jess and I change into our outfits and begin to take pictures. A few minutes later, the limo comes to a stop and Mr. Harris informs us that we have arrived. With a quick glance over at ourselves, we hop out.
I slip Mr. Harris a twenty and thank him for shuttling us around all morning and afternoon. He smiles kindly at me and tells me it was his pleasure and that he hopes we have fun. With a final wave, we head inside 104.9 Hitz.
