Chapter 10

Debby's POV

We walked back to our side of the beach quietly

It was kind of awkward and I couldn't talk to Jeff because he kept on leaving a good amount of distance between us

I mean he didn't leave me all alone and didn't walk way too far ahead of me but he didn't also stay by my side like he always did

Once we were close to our side of the beach, I saw Ryan and Jade just about to reach our side

Ryan gave Jade the bag he was holding and said something to her when he came running towards us

"Hey!" He said panting

I gave him a slight smile

"Here give me those." He said getting the firewood I was holding

"Thanks."

We finally reached our side which seemed like forever

"We'll go set the fire." Ryan said

"Okay." I said going to where Jade was

"Hey." I said

"Hey!"

"Why the long face?" Jade asked

"I'll tell you once Amber's here."

"Alright. Anyway where is she?"

"I don't know. It's already 8:15 and I'm starting to get worried."

"Why don't we give her a call?"

Jade grabbed her phone and dialed Amber's number

After a few seconds

"Well?" I asked

"Nothing."

I started to worry like I always do.

You see I'm the type that worries a lot. I'm not like Jade who is more carefree and doesn't have a care in the world.

I don't mean it in a bad way. I mean sometimes I do wish that I'm carefree like her, that I don't worry every now and then. I guess it's just in my personality.

"Chill Deb! She's with Charles. Nothing bad's going to happen." Jade said knowing me so well that I'd worry

"Fine. I'll just give her 5 minutes an if she doesn't come back then. I'm going to look for her."

"Ok."

I sat in the beach, Indian style, staring at the view

"Deb, just tell me what's wrong." Jade said breaking my stare

"Huh?"

"Clearly there's something wrong." She said looking at my hand which was on my lap

I looked at it and then I realized that my pointing finger was taping my lap

I didn't even notice it. Guess I was way too focused on my thoughts.

I just kept thinking of what Jeff said and how sad he sounded

I checked my watch and saw that 3 minutes have already passed

"I'm going to go look for Amber."

"It hasn't even been 5 minutes yet."

"Ugh. I'm just going to go tell the guys that I'm leaving to go look for Amber in 2 minutes."

"Tell them I'm coming with you."

"No need. You just stay here and call me when she comes back."

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

"Why don't you go ask Jeff to accompany you?"

I gave her an unsure look which made her change her mind

"Ryan?"

"I guess. I'll go ask him."

I went to where the boys were

"Hey Ryan, can I talk to you for a sec?" I asked

Jeff just continued working on lighting up the wood. He ignored me like as if he didn't hear me say anything.

"Yeah sure." Ryan said

We walked closer to the water and sat down

"What's up?" He asked

"Um... I just want to tell you that if Amber and or Charles don't come back in about 2 minutes, I'm going to go look for them."

"You want me to ask Jeff to come with you?"

"NO!" I said way too quickly

He laughed a little

"I didn't mean it like that. It's just something happened and let's just say that we aren't on speaking terms right now."

"Ok. So what happened? Don't worry I won't tell anyone. I promise. Pinky swear."

"Pinky swear? Aren't we a bit too old for that?"

"No one's way too old for pinky swears!!" He exclaimed

I laughed locking his pinky with mine

"I like talking to you Ryan. You make me feel so comfortable. Which is hard for because I always get tongue tied and end up not talking."

"Ohh thanks Debby. Anyway.... What happened?"

I told him everything that happened the whole Jeff "date"

I was surprised how I just told him. I mean I never told anyone anything about me especially a person that I just met and who is a boy which I would never expect myself to open up to.

He just sat there listening. As in truly listening, with all ears to be precise.

"You don't have to listen if you don't want to." I said blushing on how I kept on rambling about the "date"

"It's ok. I don't really mind."

I smiled

"Look I don't know why Jeff said what he said but why don't you talk to him later?"

"Umm.... I don't know..."

"I know that you just met Jeff but I don't think he'd do or say what he said all willy nilly like that."

"Hahaha willy nilly? What are we living in the sixties?" I said laughing

"How dare you missy!" He said bobbing his head to his right and left and had his pointing finger out and started wiggling it

I let out a loud laugh

I like Ryan. How he makes me smile and makes me feel comfortable.

"Just promise me that you'll go talk to him." He said handing me his pinky

I laughed

"Alright fine only 'cuz you cheered me up." I said locking him pinky with mine

He embraced me with a hug and I hugged him back

"Thanks." I murmured

"No prob." He said giving me a smile

"Looks like we don't have to go get a search party for Amber and Charles." He said pointing at where Amber and Charles were

He got up and handed me his hand

I took it and stood up

I walked back to where Jade was sitting while Ryan went to go help Jeff
