Chapter 55
Unfortunately, Ester was overtaken by the flood. She was swept away by it, along with the food she was carrying.
On the other hand, the father noticed that his family had a missing member, so when he ensured the safety of his wife and eldest daughter, he returned to his youngest daughter, who was now being swept away by the flood.
After congratulating my groupmates on the project discussion, I approached Steven. He smiled at me, and I smiled back as well. We hugged slightly, and he even kissed my cheek, which I let him do.
"Congratulations to us."
Today, our project on the Draping and Needle Craft subject took first place. In Steven Dutchman’s group, I got the chance to be included in the Academy’s annual summer fashion show. For a month, I did nothing but immerse myself in learning. I tried to live normally as Hailey, with her family and my new friends, just like Steven.
"Congratulations to you too," he said, while lightly touching my long hair. Steven becomes touchy, which is undeniable. However, he was kind and intelligent. As a result, we became close. We also know the real score between us, so there is no problem. If anything, maybe those judgmental eyes of those who see. "So, you want to have lunch?" His eyebrows rose as he asked that. I just laughed and then nodded. After all, we don't have the next class, so it's better to have an advanced lunch before our afternoon class takes over.
Steven walked out first with my bag. I let him and just followed. I was no longer surprised by the variety of whispers I heard. It's not that new; I’ve gotten used to it well over the months. I never thought the time would come when I would understand how Hailey feels every time people gossip about her. Of course, gossip can't be stopped no matter what explanation is given. So instead of talking, just keep quiet.
"Look at that. Isn't Hailey Albus's girlfriend? "
"So flirty."
I couldn't help but be amazed at what I heard. What they see is what they believe. There are people really like that, natural and unchangeable or unavoidable.
"Do not mind them," Steven whispered to me.
"Do I seem to mind them?" I asked, smiling. That's when he laughed and held my hand to lead me out of the academy.
Aboard his red Porsche, we went to a high-end restaurant here in Plamour. There, we decided to eat while talking about things like school, fashion, and whatsoever. Within a month, I’m sure one of the reasons why the two of us became close like this was because we both shared the same interests. In small things, we get along well, but we don't like each other.
I don't know, but there is a part of me that thinks that maybe God introduced Steven to me so that I could call someone my friend other than Gavin, the grim reaper.
"Amm, excuse me first, Steven. I'll just go to the comfort room. " He nodded, so I immediately wiped my lips with a table napkin and quickly got up and went to the comfort room.
When I got in there, I was sure I was all alone. There, I face Gavin, who I had seen earlier following me.
"What is it again?" I asked irritably. For a month, I couldn’t say everything was normal because sometimes Gavin was following me whenever or wherever I went. Though, he’s the only grim reaper I notice hanging around me and no one else. Either lost souls or only him.
"Why are you with that man again, Guardian of the Soul?" He seemed irritated to be asking me while leaning against the back door of the comfort room. "We were just eating Gavin, and Steve was my friend."
"Oh! I'm dead! You already have a nickname for him. Do you want me to die, Guardian of Souls? " My forehead furrowed at what Gavin was saying.
"Aren't you already dead? How can you die—" I was the one who stopped what I was about to say when I also answered my question. There is only one way for a grim reaper to die, and no one else is capable of doing that but Saint.
I took a deep breath when I remembered him again. For a month, I forced myself to forget him first, but every time I saw Gavin or maybe someone at school would mention Albus' name. He just comes back to my mind and my questions only increase as to why he doesn’t show up. Why does he still send Gavin just to greet me and why, until now, has he still had no explanation for me?
"Gavin, please if you don't need anything. Don't go around like you're watching my movements because it's not funny anymore. " I said seriously. There, I saw how stunned he was. He stared at me for a minute, which also led to his sigh. After that, he pulled out a black envelope.
"You need to reap a soul today. It's exactly midnight later." After saying that, he approached me and handed me the black envelope. For some reason, I was suddenly nervous. I unconsciously close my hand in conjunction with the loud trump in my chest. "I hope you haven't forgotten the reason why you've been here so far." After Gavin said those things, he disappeared from my sight like a bubble. And I was left with only the last words he said.
"I hope you haven't forgotten the reason why you've been here so far."
"I hope you haven't forgotten the reason why you've been here so far."
"I hope you haven't forgotten the reason why you've been here so far."
There is only one reason why I am still here, and that is to die to be with my father again. At that thought, I was even more nervous. I couldn't help but be stunned for a moment at the black envelope with no name on it.
How can I reap this person's soul if I do not know where to reap him? Gavin didn't even tell me—
"I hope you haven't forgotten the reason why you've been here so far."
When what Gavin said came back to my mind, my eyes widened and I immediately had an idea of the situation. I quickly ran out of the comfort room and to get back to Steven.
"Oh, what happened?" He asked in surprise when he saw me running closer. Yet I didn’t have time to talk things over with him. It was exactly noon, and I didn't want to waste time.
"I'll go first; there's an emergency at home." I quickly said before I grabbed my backpack and ran out of the resto. I went home by commuting even though I still have an afternoon class. I just walked into the village, and when I got to the front of the Perelman mansion, I was chasing my breath.
"I hope you haven't forgotten the reason why you've been here so far."
My Dad, Arman, is the reason why I want to die. And I’m not a fool to not understand what Gavin was implying to me earlier.
"Oh, Hailey, why did you come home early? Don't you still have class? " Hailey's mother opened the door for me. Her hand was still wet, as if she had just finished washing. She was also carrying trash that seemed to be thrown outside.
Yet, though breathless, I was able to ask her. I have to ask. I need to see Mr. Perelman. I will not let what happened to Dad Arman happen again. I won’t let him go without bidding goodbye.
"W-Where's Dad?"
