chapter twenty - braids

The next few days had been amazing. They had spent days at the beach, they had gone to the mall to buy some new clothes, they had visited some of Scarlett's close friends and Scarletts parents had come round a few times to have lunch or dinner and properly introduce Maddie into the Johansson family.

It had been a colder night in LA and Scarlett and Maddie had just got back from the beach. As Maddie hadn't properly ever been to the beach, they were making the most of having it on their doorstep. Quickly running inside the house still in her bikini, Maddie rushed into her shower to get warm. The sea water had made her hair all knotty and matted but she had left her brush in her bedroom. She couldn't be bothered to climb out the shower and drip water everywhere, so instead she tried to untangle her hair with conditioner but failed.
Once she was clean and warm, Maddie stepped out the shower and got changed into some sweats and an over sized short sleeved shirt. Her hair was still badly knotted but she didn't want to stay in her room all night and brush it; so instead Maddie carried her brush into the living room and plonked herself on the sofa.

Scarlett wasn't around at the moment so Maddie skipped through Disney to look for a movie. As she scrolled her eyes fell on The Little Mermaid. Maddie knew that Scarlett and Chris knew the words to every song in the movie so she stuck in on to see if Scarlett would come running in. Soon enough, Maddie heard Scarletts office door open and an executable Scarlett rushed in. She jumped onto the sofa and plonked herself right next to Maddie.
"You can't start it without me!!"
"I didn't know you wanted to watch it....." she smirked at Scarlett "Anyway, what were you doing in the office?"
"Oh umm just some paper work.."
Maddie, satisfied with the answer continued watching the film. About 10 minutes passed and Maddie could feel her hair getting dry. She'd have to tackle it soon. Grabbing her brush she attempted to unknot the first layer. It wasn't working. She didn't know how much annoyance salt water would've caused otherwise she wouldn't have swam in the see three days in a row!

Whilst Maddie had a mental and physical battle with herself and her hair, Scarlett watched from next to her on the sofa. She couldn't help but giggle. She knew she shouldn't but it was funny seeing Maddie brush her hair from her roots down instead of tips up. However, suddenly it hit her. Maybe Maddie had never been 'taught' to brush her hair 'properly'? That may have sounded pathetic but maybe Maddie had never have someone brush her hair for her. Or braid it. A sudden urge of maternal instinct washed over her and she quickly blurted out
"Do you need any help? I can brush your hair for you and then braid it if you would like?"

Maddie turned around confused. No one had ever offered to brush her hair let alone braid it.
"Um yeah sure"
"Come here them"
Scarlett sat up cross legged and Maddie shuffled backwards on the sofa so she was sat just in front of Scarlett with her back to her.
"Pass me your brush a second"
Maddie quickly passed her the brush. She could feel Scarlett brush through her hair gently. Starting from the tips and making her way upwards so not to make any knots bigger. It felt very soothing and therapeutic almost but Maddie still felt a little bit awkward. She didn't know if she was slouching or sitting too straight. She didn't really know what to do with her hands either, so instead she played with her hair-band and concentrated on the Little Mermaid. Soon her hair had been brushed and as Maddie ran her fingers through it, if felt like silk.
"Do you want me to braid it for you as well?"
"If thats alright?"

Scarlett said her usual about how she wouldn't have offered if she didn't want to, so she proceeded to spilt Maddie's hair into two. Then into three for each braid. Maddie could feel the soft sensation of Scarletts fingers brushing against her scalp every time she reached for a new piece of hair. This was the most relaxing thing ever. Maddie could just melt right there.
"Hair-band"
Maddie hadn't even noticed that the braids were done, so she passed the two hair-bands over her shoulder so Scarlett could tie them off. Once they were done Maddie sat there and gently admired them. They were beautiful.

Maddie felt a soft pair of hands placed on her shoulders.
"Come here sweetheart."
Maddie felt herself gently being pulled into a sideways hug.
"You must be freezing darling. You've got wet hair and only a top on, you'll catch a cold"
Maddie curled up to Scarletts side and she pulled a blanket over them. Maddie hadn't had any loving affection shown towards her in years so this was all very new. But she felt herself relax into Scarlett's side as she snuggled down to keep warm.
"I love you Maddie."
"I love you too mom"
