chapter thirty four - jenny and benji

Maddie travelled for 9 hours in the car to the state of Utah, stopping only three times to stretch their legs. With the absolute disgust of Ms Snooty woman (Maddie still didn't know her name and didn't care too) Maddie let Loki run about the back of the car. I mean he was only a a kitten and he couldn't be cooped up for nine hours straight! During the antagonising nine hours, Maddie only shed a few tears. She didn't feel angry. She didn't feel upset. She didn't feel anything. She just sat there staring out the window watching her world slowly fall apart.

At around midnight, the car finally pulled up outside a massive house. Maddie peered up at it and wondered if it was even the right place.
"Right then cmon honey. This is it. Out we get"
Maddie tiredly climbed out the car and pulled Loki's cage behind her. The driver took Maddie's two suitcases and rucksack out of the boot whilst the annoying woman went and knocked on the door.
A middle aged couple appeared at the door both with an excited look on their face."Hello. Mrs Wellman! This must be Maddie!" The man said
"Yes! Hello, well more like good evening! Ahaha! Yes this is the wonderful Maddie!" The woman moved out of the way to show Maddie standing there awkwardly. "She's a little bit fragile at the moment so I don't think she's going to speak" This woman has the audacity to say that in front of Maddie! Just to prove her wrong, Maddie got rid of all awkwardness and politely introduced herself.
"Yes, my names Maddie! And this is Loki!" She said pointing at her cat whilst glaring at Mrs Wellman. "Oh I do hope you don't mind pets"
The couple looked at each other awkwardly before this time the woman spoke. "Oh. Pets. Of course we don't mind them..." she said disgusted. They obviously did. "And hello Maddie! We're the Fredricksons and we're happy to meet you! Please come in!"
"Well honey! This is where I leave you! I hope never to see you again!" All the adults started laughing whilst Maddie just stood there looking confused. "Oh Maddie! I mean this is your forever home! I'll never need to see you again!"
"Oh aha" Maddie faked a laugh. This was not and never would be her forever home. Her forever home would be with Scarlett.
"Anyway anyway come in. And goodbye Mrs Wellman. We'll speak soon!"
"Bye guys!"
And with that, Maddie was ushered into the house and the heavy doors shut behind her.

"So Maddie. My names Jenny and this is Benji. You can call us whatever your comfortable so don't feel pressured to call us mom and dad immediately!" Jenny said and then winked.
"Ok"
"Seeing as...it's quite a late hour, we're gonna send you off to bed and you can meet everyone tomorrow!"
"Everyone?"
"The rest of the fam!" Benji exclaimed excitedly
"Ahh ok"
"Let me show you your bedroom!"
Jenny led Maddie up two flights of stairs with Benji following behind them with the luggage. They passed many bedrooms and two family rooms. How many kids did they have?! 20?!
After passing a few more doors, Maddie finally reached her bedroom and Jenny opened the door for her.
"This is it!"
Much to Maddie hate, the room was actually quite nice. Big, airy, had a big window looking onto something which she couldn't see in the dark yet. It had a double bed, built in wardrobe and desk. She let Loki out his cage and let him explore.
"Obviously there's time for you to decorate but for now I hope you like it!"
"Thank you so much! I really appreciate it but for now I think I'm going to go straight to sleep"
"Okay that's fine honey! Goodnight. Sleep well!"

Maddie was left alone. Alone with her thoughts. Alone with her emotions. The events of the day suddenly came crashing down on her. Maddie thought she had cried all the tears possible but still, tears flowed heavily and Maddie sobbed silently into her hands. She had fished through her suitcase to find something comfy to wear to bed but instead she had found one of Scarletts jumpers. It smelt of Scarletts perfume and Maddie held onto it like a lifeline, like it was the only thing keeping her alive. Through her blurred vision, Maddie stumbled over to the bed, lying down and pulling Scarlett jumper and a blanket over her shoulders. Loki came over and lay with Maddie as she scrolled though her phone.

Maddie opened it and through the tears she saw it was from Lizzie.

scars too upset to text but I promise we're gonna get you back.

please don't promise anything that you can't keep
