"Are you going to finally tell me where you've been and what you've been doing all this while?"
I laugh into my glass of Hennessy. We're both out in a secluded part of the Williams' garden drinking and staring into the night sky.
"A year, Sola. One whole year. Without me" I continue laughing and drop my glass on the small table in front of us. "Must've been very depressing"
I take a second to calm down before responding to his question.
"I've been around. Doing mindless shit I'm not meant to be doing" I think back to my time with Chris. I think back to the time when I got my tattoo after getting wasted with a close friend of mine. At least I'd picked a reasonable tattoo.
"Like what?" He says smiling.
"I had a sugar daddy. Then we broke up because he had a wife. And a child. Seventeen."
Lekan gasps. I don't think he was prepared for what I was about to say, even though he asked for it.
"I know right?" My head feels light and tipsy. "And he had the audacity to come back to me, telling me they're divorced".
"Wow, why'd they get divorced? Did his wife find out?"
"She did. I work for the bitch"
His eyes widen. I think. All I can see right now is blurry.
"My parents don't know so shhhhhhh" I down the contents of my glass and pour another to the brim. Am I drunk? Anyways who gives a fuck. I sip from the top carefully so I don't pour it on the table. "And like, it's not my fault. I didn't even know they knew each other. I was just his girlfriend and her daughter's au pair. She behaved like she wasn't even married and he did the same too. Her daughter didn't even say shit about her dad. I mean she did but she never mentioned his name. Thought the fucker was dead or some shit."
"Oh wow, that's...that's crazy" he takes the bottle and pours himself another glass. The bottle's half gone now.
"You know? I tip my head back to enjoy the cold breeze on my face. "Technically I'm not fired, but I'm on a leave. Can you believe that woman? Neglected her daughter for such a long time and returns and acts so entitled. I mean, who does that? I was basically her mom. And then...she decides to be nasty to me when she's the one who caused her marriage to fall apart"
Lekan chuckes into his glass before taking another sip. His laugh sounds like music, if that makes sense. Deep and smooth. Reminds me of Giveon. I clear my throat. He has more control than me. He hasn't finished the half glass of Hennessy he poured for himself about an hour ago. I've had like three and I still want more.
"And your parents are still hounding you for a husband" he says and drops his glass on the table.
"My mom". I correct him. My dad doesn't mind. "Whenever she calls it's always about me getting a husband. Like, can you believe her? She really made me dress up so nice because she wants me to marry one of y'all". I blurt out
"Mmm?" He hums. "Well she did a good job"
I look at him and try to focus on one head. "Don't try that flirty bullshit with me. I'm sure Amaka wouldn't like that. Would she?" I joked about his girlfriend.
"Yeah, about that. We broke up"
He said that while I was drinking and I almost spat it out. "You what?" I shout.
"She cheated. With some musician of some sort"
Lekan and Amaka looked so perfect together I can't even think of her actually cheating. She was all over him...to the point it was nearly annoying and disgusting.
