The leaves crunched beneath my feet as I strolled down the street. Occasionally, one would fall past me, lightly swaying as the air gently carried it to the ground. The air was crisp, the kind of cold that made you feel alive when you breathed it in. My world was painted red and orange, and I caught the scent of cinnamon from a nearby cafe. I spotted it about ten feet in front of me. And so I decided to head there. My class would start at 10 and I still had an hour and a half before it began. Maybe I could stay there for several minutes. I sighed, relishing the feeling of fall. It was something I'd have to wait a whole year to have again.
"What a pleasant surprise!" A cheerful voice of a woman dragged my thoughts back in reality. There she was, standing next to me in the counter, holding a cup of coffee while wearing a smile. She looked familiar but I couldn't remember where we met.
"Do we know each other?" The smile on her face didn't disappear as I asked her.
"We do. Danielle Grey at your service." She was so jolly. She never stopped smiling at me.
"Danielle Grey huh? Where did we meet?" I was like a fool asking her those questions.
"Oh come on! Alexis Woodley. The girl who was so grumpy but fun. How would I ever forget this woman who criticized me all the time when we were in the club?."
Oh, shoot! I gradually remembered everything. She was the one whom I bumped in the club the night I was so problematic. The one who was wearing thick make-up and the one who was so talkative and kinky.
"So?" She said when I didn't say anything.
"Yeah. I remember now. Sorry, I didn't have a chance to say goodbye at that time. I was kinda drunk." I said while ordering a cup of cappuccino.
"It's fine. Your boyfriend did."
I abruptly glanced at her. "I'm sorry but you're wrong. Graynard is not my boyfriend."
"Well, he said he was your boyfriend. Hmmm... And he's undeniably hot!" She chirped.
"Maybe hot but he's not my type," I replied and turned my back after the cashier handed me my change.
"Hey! Where are you going?" She walked behind me.
"I gotta go."
"Can we talk for a bit?"
"But. We're not friends."
"Maybe we can be. Please." I rolled my eyes at her but then agreed in the end.
"Okay. Let's go back inside. My class starts at 10." I said as I led her inside the shop.
"Thanks. Are you also studying in NYU?" She asked while looking around to find an empty table for us. Finally, she found one.
"Yeah. How about you?" I asked her back.
"Yeah. And I'm taking Public Economics and Finance." She said as we sat down.
"Cool. I'm taking English Literature."
She laughed. "Seriously? Are you not bored of reading novels and other literary compositions?"
"Nope. In fact, I love them." She just shrugged. "By the way, how are you and your Japanese boyfriend?"
"You're kidding me." Her face turned serious as the mention of her ex-boyfriend.
"I'm just asking."
"You really hate me that much?"
"No.. Ahm... Sorry. I was just asking." I apologized then brought the cup to my mouth. The scent of my coffee soothed me.
