Mario started racing down the hill to his house. Mr. L, close behind him. "Do you even know where the book's hidden??" Mr. L called out. Mario shook his head. "Luigi won't tell me, but I know it's somewhere in there. And if that...thing found it, then we could be in serious trouble"

The two made their way to the bottom of the field. Mario approached his house. "Oh, great, whoever that thing was, they broke my door!" Mr. L tried to hold in a laugh. "Oh.... yeah, that thing obviously was what broke this door. What a monster." Mario glared back at him. "You broke it, didn't you." Mr. L pretended to be shocked. "What? Me?? How dare you accuse me of such things." Mario ignored him, "Who cares, we don't have time for this."

Mario stepped inside and immediately gasped, which shocked Mr. L a little. "What?? What is it?" Mario quickly turned and blocked the doorway. "Don't go in there." Mr. L was confused. "What?" Mario continued to block the entrance. "D-Don't go in." Mr. L crossed his arms, now ticked off. "Whatever it is, I'll be fine. What is it?" Mr. L tried to push his way through, but Mario pushed him back. "No, you won't be fine. Don't." Mr. L rolled his eyes. "Now you're just ticking me off. Just let me in." Mario kept wrestling him back. "Come on, Mario! We don't have time for this." Mr. L was getting really annoyed.

Tears began to form in Mario's eyes. Mr. L looked somewhat confused. "You're crying now?? Just let me in!" Mario held his ground. "No. You can't." Mr. L, ticked off, stepped back. "Alright. Alright. I won't go in. You win." Mario sighed and let his guard down, before Mr. L yelled "HAVE AT YOU!" and rammed into him, causing them to both tumble inside.

Mr. L smiled. "Ha!" Mario's face had a horrified expression on it. Mr. L rolled his eyes. "What are you so afraid of all the sudden??" Mario looked over to a spot in the room. Mr. L followed his gaze. "What was it you didn't want me to see-"

Mr. L's face went pale. Mario got up and stepped back. "T-that."

Mr. L  froze, everything stopped mattering. He sat there, holding his breath, frozen in that moment. The world seemed to freeze, time seemed to stop.

Mr. L slowly got up, and walked over. "D-Dim?" He kneeled down next to the lifeless jester. No signs of life. "Dim, what is this? W-What are you doing?"

He felt something warm trickle down his face. It fell onto Dimentio's broken mask. A tear? That couldn't be right. He almost never cried. Crying was Luigi's thing. He reached up and touched his own face. Sure enough, it was a tear. More tears began to form. This couldn't be real. "Dimentio? Please wake up. I-" Mr. L began to sob. Mario stepped back again. "I-I'm gonna look for the book." He said, holding tears in and heading to Luigi's room.

When Mario left, Mr. L slowly lowered his hands to Dimentio's face, and carefully took the rest of the mask off. His neck had marks on it and looked all distorted. His eyes were both shut, but he didn't look like he was sleeping. He looked dead. Mr. L's eyes welled up. He collapsed over Dimentio's body and started sobbing loudly. He didn't care who heard. He was dead, and his body was right here. There was no way to bring him back this time. Nothing he could do.

"D-Dim, come back, please." He sobbed. The last time he lost Dim, it didn't quite feel this way. Maybe that was because last time he didn't know how much he cared about him, and last time there was still hope that he was out there, but this time there was no hope. His dead body was right here, that was it. No way to correct this.

Mr. L took off his own glove, revealing a few scars from when he had to fight Mario when he was sprouted not long ago. He then took of one of Dimentio's gloves. His hand was still scarred over as well from when Mr. L and Luigi fought him what seemed like forever ago. "H-hey Dim. Look. We still match." Mr. L said, smiling a little through tears, before breaking down again.

"I-I just wish I could reset time. I want to hear your laugh one last time, listen to one of your ridiculous similes one last time. To see your smile, to-" He begun to sob loudly again. He had never felt so much pain. There was no way this could get worse....

.....

It got worse.

Mr. L heard a scream, then some sobs coming from Luigi's room, but he was to devastated to move. He clung onto Dim, never wanting to let go, when Mario's sobs grew louder. Upon seeing Mario, he quickly put what was left of Dim's mask back on. It's what Dim would have wanted. He saw Mario walk into the room carrying something....no. Someone.

Mr. L looked up and over at Mario. In his arms, was a lifeless Luigi.

"N-No. NONONO!" Mr. L screamed, getting up and rushing over to Mario. He looked down at Luigi's crushed face. He lowered his hands to it, Luigi was cold. Both Mario and Mr. L had tears dripping down. Mario cried, "I found him in the basement. He must have b-been protecting the book. They- They must have been protecting the book." Mr. L looked back at Dim. "N-No. I- They- THEY WERE ALL I HAD!" Mr. L collapsed to his knees. "I don't have anyone else."

Mario, gently placed his brother down next to Dimentio, then also started sobbing hysterically. "M-My brother! Luigi! I-I" Their cries were loud and filled with grief and devastation. It didn't matter who heard.

"Ah, there they are." She said.
