Messy. All of this was so messy.

He hated that. Hated when people couldn't just stay in their lanes and accept this for what it was. He didn't run a match making service.

Well, maybe he did. In a way he supposed it could be viewed like that. He did, after all, match people up. Sometimes a little too well.

But that was his knack. His gift. What he had apparently been put on this earth to do. In any other age, he likely would have been some legitimate matchmaker, finding people's husband's and wives instead of sugar babies for them to spoil and daddies who could foot their bills. He was all at once exceptionally good with people while hating being around them, an interesting combination that had almost ruined his career path.

But he had learned how to fake it. Put on a certain voice and expression so no one ever knew how much he hated being in their presence.

Seokjin had seen right through it, a talent only earned from years of working with the general public. And for some reason, that had made him like the kid so much more than he should have.

A mistake, probably, considering where this was headed. Nothing good ever came out of these types of situations.

But really, he only had himself to blame.

His top concern was always for the babies; because they were the most vulnerable in all of this. It was easy to get swept up in the promise of a better, more expensive life style that just wasn't going to be sustainable. It always started off the same. With them just wanting to survive. Make easy money. Get their rent paid. Maybe get some cute shoes or nice clothes along the way.

Those who could learn to separate their feelings did okay. Took on a totally different persona and kept it removed from their real self. Some of them thrived even. Found situations that worked well for them and kept at it until the well had run dry.

He'd thought that would be Seokjin. Really, he'd seemed pretty determined to view this as nothing more than a job. Sure he'd wanted someone attractive, but who didn't? It wasn't like he was really asking for much. He'd seemed just detached enough to make it. To maybe even be good at this. He definitely had the face and body to make a killing.

Pairing him with Jungkook shouldn't have impacted that. Honestly he couldn't figure out what it was about this kid that had Seokjin so conflicted. Sure he was attractive. Young and innocent. Cute even. But that should have just made using him easier. At least he wouldn't have to imagine someone else when they were together.

He still didn't know if Seokjin had any actual feelings for the kid or if it was entirely one sided. Despite the way he seemed content to act totally domestic and loved up, he also seemed to still have an ounce of sense. Realistically, things like this just didn't work out.

And part of him wanted to comment on how unfair it was for him to want to play house while still getting paid for his time. Sure, it was a smart move. A boss bitch move. And with any one else he would have praised it. But Jungkook had wanted to cancel the contract so they could have a chance at something real, without the fact that Seokjin was basically being compensated for spending time with him hanging over them, tainting everything.

And what did Seokjin do? Go and prolong their torture.

This was probably where he should step in and just say no. Tell them to work out their issues without dragging him into it. Yeah, he would lose the commission, but he could chalk it up to time wasted and a lesson learned.

What was the plan after the year was up? To go their seperate ways and act like nothing happened?

Someone had to knock the sense he was sure was still rattling around Seokjin's skull back into place. And he guessed it was going to have to be him.

...

"We need to talk." He hated starting conversations like that, and here he was doing it twice in a row.

"Hello to you too, Yoongi. How are you doing on this wonderful evening? I'm fine, thank you for asking." That right there was probably why he liked Seokjin so much. The sass.

"I'm not renewing your contract." He wasn't always quite this blunt. Nearly, sometimes. It was both one of his best and worst qualities.

"What? Why?" What made it worse, perhaps, was the fact that Seokjin was clearly dressed up for something. Wearing nicer clothes than he had been before, tucked away into some back seat of the subway. And maybe he should wait - but this couldn't.

"Because you need to know that the reason Jungkook wanted to terminate it in the first place was because he thinks what you two have could be real. Because he wants to try without the knowledge that he's paying you to be nice to him hanging over his head."

"That's -"

"Foolish. Yeah, I know. But listen, worst case scenario is it doesn't work out and you come crawling back to me and I find you another meal ticket." Which was probably what was going to happen. He wasn't nearly idealistic enough to think it wouldn't. "And if it does you just scored a dude with - how did you put it? - a really big dick and really deep pockets who by the way looks like a cross between a bunny and bambi and should not be that attractive."

He could see it. Could see the wheels turning in Seokjin's mind. Knew that he was calculating, adjusting and shifting trying to find what was right and what was wrong.

"If we terminate the contract, what happens to what he already gave me?" Really, he didn't blame the other for the question. Not when he was looking at having his rent paid for six months or the prospect of being tossed out in a matter of days.

"It's written into the contract that all gifts are final. Everything is yours." It wasn't much, not nearly everything his babies usually got in the first weeks. But he guessed that said something too.

"Then I -" There was so much hesitation. And he got it. Understood it. This was scary. Terrifying. Going from one thing to another. Facing the prospect of letting someone else in. And if he was someone else, he would have said how it was going to be okay. How it was worth it.

But he wasn't. So he let the dice fall where they may.
