She got the most votes. Out of every elf, she got the most votes. Councillor Oralie. Wow. The newest member of the council. Being a councillor was a tremendous responsibility. Was she ready for it? Making decisions that could impact the entire world? Standing alongside the most powerful elves in the Lost Cities? Never being able to get married? Although they all worried her, never being married did seem quite drastic. How could she never find love? Of course there was someone. But he didn't like her back. Or at least he couldn't, since he was a councillor too. Standing alongside the most powerful elves in the Lost Cities, was more like standing next to the one man she truly loved. Stupid isn't it? Having a crush? Even being two hundred and fifty or so, little crushes still crept up into Oralie's life. Although this crush being little was more of an understatement. But, it doesn't matter. Oralie had to be professional. Or least try to be professional, and if professional was another word for 'ignoring her feelings' that was ok too.
"Oralie!" Kenric said, as he danced around her.
"Hey." She said.
"Excited to be a councillor?" He asked.
"Of course." She said, but with slight hesitation.
"What's wrong?" He asked, placing a hand on her shoulder. His hand was warm and created a forever lasting spot of warmth on her shoulder.
"It's just- I'm not sure I'm ready." Oralie said.
"Ready for what? Being a councillor, or something more specific?" He asked, almost as if he knew exactly of the burden she didn't want to bear.
"Yeah." She said, wondering if Kenric felt her lie. But she felt something. Something she had never sensed when around Kenric. Love. He loved her. But, he couldn't. He shouldn't. She tried to brush off the feeling, but it just kept getting stronger.
"I-I have to go." Oralie said, running off. Love. A feeling she never thought she would feel from him. From Kenric.
She walked out towards the crowd. The endless sea of elves. Her cheeks burned. Everyone was looking at her. EVERYONE.
"You ok?" A voice whispered behind her. She turned around to see the sweet, smiling face of Kenric.
"Yeah, just a little nervous." Oralie said. A little nervous was an understatement. She was petrified. She was not ready for this kind of commitment. Giving her life away? Sure, being a councillor was a huge privilege. But was a title and a crown worth giving away everything? Making decisions for the entire Elvin population? Although, being a councillor now was more of just a title and a flashy crown. Life was perfect. So was a title enough? Enough to sign away her entire life? Standing just minutes away from becoming a councillor, this would become a reality. Being an councillor. Her heartbeat was pulsing faster. She ran. This wasn't worth it. She ran past all the other councillors, past the body of elves, and as far as she could go. She sat down and buried her face in her giant pink dress.
"Oralie?" Someone called. Kenric. Of course it was Kenric.
"I'm not ready for this. Signing my entire life away? I haven't even had enough time to review my lists. I don't want to become a councillor." Oralie said.
"I thought the same thing. You know that?" he said.
"You're the big, confident, handsome eye of the council. How could you be afraid?" she asked.
"Everyone is afraid, some just do a better job of hiding it." he said as he inched closer to her. She felt it again. Love. Affection towards her. Why did she manifest as an empath?
"Feelings are a lot harder to control when you're an Empath. Other's feelings are always swarming your head. Ignoring their feelings is hard. But ignoring your own?" she sighed.
"I figured. Being a councillor isn't as bad as you think, and you can always step down." Kenric said.
"Stepping down is hard. It's not worth being on the council just to step down." Oralie whispered.
"Yes, but stepping down is always an option." He said.
"I guess." Oralie shrugged.
"So what's to lose?" Kenric asked.
"Well, I've already been publicly humiliated by running away." Oralie smiled.
"I'm sure everyone will forget about it eventually." Kenric laughed.
"Sure, eventually." She said.
"You know what I won't forget?" He asked.
"What?" Oralie laughed.
"When you called me handsome." He smirked.
"I did not!" Oralie said.
"No, I'm pretty sure you said 'you're the big, handsome, confident eye of the council.'" He said.
"Stupid things come out of my mouth when I'm not fully aware of what I'm saying." She said.
"Well, I don't think that was stupid. I am quite handsome." He said, nudging her arm.
"Let's go." She said as she stood up and ran back to the councillors room.
They handed her a circlet. Pink tourmaline. Of course, it was pink. When the ceremony was finished, Coucncillor Bronte walked up to her.
"I knew you were going to be an important elf." He said.
"What?" She asked.
"On the day we first formally met, when you parents died. I saw something in you. Clearly, that something has blossomed into you newfound career as a councillor."
"I-uh thanks." She said.
"I knew pink was your favourite colour, so I put a word of favour in." Councillor Bronte winked. He walked away, and Oralie kept his words in her mind. He saw something in her. He saw something in 10 year-old Oralie. Maybe she was meant for the job as a councillor. Or even meant for something more.
