OK WE'VE FINALLY REACHED THE POINT IN WHICH THEY'RE GOING TO DO THE FINTAN MEMORY RECOVERY THING! yay!
The flames. They weren't normal flames. They were everblaze. Sophie. Oralie's heart drummed in her chest. It would be her fault again. Her fault for letting Sophie down. Her fault that they would all be dead.
"Can you transmit to her? Quickly. We don't have much time." Oralie said while trying to remain calm. Breathe in, breathe out.
"FITZ! FASTER." Oralie said.
"I'm trying, but she's not responding. Everblaze is our code word. She doesn't understand." Fitz said. Everblaze started raining from the roof. Oralie was pushed away from the flames, taking Sophie and Fitz with her. Where were the others? How to we get out? Her heart was pounding out of her chest. There was nowhere to go. The windows were melting everything was melting. Sophie emerged from Fintan's mind.
"Where's everyone else?" Sophie asked. It was so much harder to stay calm. All she wanted to do was breakdown on the floor, and panic. They weren't going to make it out alive."No!" Fitz screamed. "No! No! NO!"
"The clothes won't protect you." Sophie said. "Everblaze burns through everything."
"But my father-"
"Is finding his own way out." Oralie said, trying to retain the last bit of sensibility as she could. Oralie screamed. A drop of the melting jewels burned her shoulder. This was it. She was going to die. A sense of darkness came over her. A shadow that was cold, and made the burn of the melting jewels ease.
"I can help you. I'll let you live. But just let me take him." A crisp, cold voice said. It reminded her of something. Something she couldn't quite pin her finger on."Save Sophie and Fitz too. Please. They're just children." Oralie pleaded. She didn't care to mention specifically why she wanted to save Sophie, because the voice could use it against her.
"Of course. Just children. They can go." It said.
"It's ok. Just breathe. Everything will be alright."
A hand grabbed her arm and pulled her towards a melting window. Sophie. What was Sophie doing? Sophie pushed them through the hole. They weren't going to fit. The hole was far too small. And yet, they did. Sophie was going to teleport. Smart. She was smart and she was thinking sensibly. They landed back on a shadowy field not too far away from Oblivimyre. Oblivimyre. The prison that was supposed to be inflammable. Ironic that now, it's being consumed by flames. Fitz started running for his father. We found the others and we had to collect the ingredients for frissyn. Sophie and Fitz went to get quintessence. She had to collect shimmering silver fruits from the gnomes (I just made this up I have no idea what other ingredients to frissyn are). She had always been, and will always be the little sensitive councillor who's afraid to get her hands dirty. But, she got an easy job, so she wasn't complaining. Considering this was the easiest job, it didn't take too long to find the fruits. But where was Kenric? She hadn't seen him come out of the building. Although she hadn't seen a number of people as well. He ok. Wasn't he?
***
When she got back with the gnomish fruit, the surrounding area of Oblivimyre was packed with elves. Every alchemist in the Lost Cities was there. Sophie and Fitz had come back. Tiergan, Alden and all the councillors were back, and scrambling to get the last ingredients of frissyn. All the councillors but one. Kenric. He had just gone to get something right? She rushed to the group of councillors.
"Where's Kenric?" She said, trying to hide the panic in her voice."Oralie... I-I'm sorry. He didn't make it out." Councillor Emery said, while stepping closer to her. No. No. No. Not Kenric. She had pushed away her feelings. She had built a wall so high she couldn't even see her emotions for him. But the wall came crashing down. Tears streamed down her face. Uncontrollable sobs. The remaining other councillors crowded around her, reassuring her it would be ok. But it wouldn't. Nothing would ever be the same. Why? Why hadn't he jumped out with them? The voice. The cold crisp voice that had blasted through her head. She let it in. All those years ago, when her parents died. It had been dormant, waiting for the next time to strike. She had said it could kill him. She spared Sophie, Fitz and her own life, but told it go after his. This was her fault. Kenric was gone, and there was nothing she could do about it.
-there will be another chapter after this, don't worry this isn't the end :)
