ETTA GASPED as she withdrew her head from the pensieve. Catching her breath, she took in her surroundings. Stone walls, moving portraits, books upon books upon books. The office she had been scolded in one too many times."Why are you showing me this? My memories, really? The last happy thing I have left?" Etta said, tears forming in her brown hues as she focused on the elderly man in front of her.
"You remember your friends, don't you? Miss Atwood has been making daily trips to the owlery sending letters to the location where you were supposedly buried. Mr. Berkshire has been facing a drastic decline in grades. Mr. Malfoy- he's the worst of them all. He doesn't go to class, Vylette. I have not seen him in months. Now I understand your situation, but I also understand that the problem has been resolved. Don't you and your sisters want to return to your lives? Finish school? Get a degree?" Dumbledore tried to convince her. Etta missed her old life, but she did not want to face the consequences of lying to her friends for years about her father. She was at a crossroads.
"I can't go back." Etta shuddered as she remembered what happened months ago.
Dead bodies everywhere, fighting, supernatural beings invading the land that once had been peaceful. It was a mess, and she was all a part of it. Her father had pushed for her not to participate in the battle, and yet she slipped through his grasp. She killed so many superhuman beings, sent by mutant Titan named Thanos. He had come from a different galaxy and was now attempting to restore balance by obtaining all six infinity stones, which would grant him the power of eliminating half of the population. She watched as Thanos pushed his axe further and further into her father's chest.
Thor Odinson had recovered, but it never would have happened if he hadn't been distracted by a certain young brunette demi-god on the battlefield. What would have occurred if Etta had stayed home that day? This had been a constant thought drilling into her head throughout the past six months. What if.
"Vylette, your friends need you. Please tell me you will return." Dumbledore squinted at her.
Tears poured down Etta's pink cheeks.
"I can't. What if Thanos strikes again? What if he descovers my abilities like he had Loki? He will kill me, or Zena, or Lyra, or Mum, or Dad. That's not something I can risk again.""Miss Odinson, you and I both understand that you are safe to re-enter your life. You cannot live this life of illusions that keep you hidden from the eye of your loved ones." Albus Dumbledore was a convincing man, and to be fair he was not wrong. Etta sat in silence, mixed emotions coursing through her as she trued to decide. Of course she loved Draco, Enzo, Freya, Alora and Blaise. But she couldn't imagine the betrayal they would feel if they knew she had been hiding the most important aspect of her life from them for years. She was afraid of how they would react, not of Thanos or any other supernatural being.
"I-" Etta started, but was immediately cut off by a sharp knock at the door. She created an invisibility illusion and disappeared into thin air.
"Come in." Dumbledore said once Etta was clearly out of sight.
"Professor?" The door creaked open, revealing a not-so healthy looking Draco Malfoy. Suddenly the whole atmosphere of the room dropped. The air became cold and stale. He looked awful, red tired eyes and he had gotten skinnier. It broke Etta's heart.
"Ah, Mr. Malfoy."
"Sorry if I interrupted you sir, Snape said you requested to talk with me?"
"Right. It'll have to wait until later, shall we reschedule?"
"I'll come back tomorrow sir."
"Perfect." They nodded at eachother and Draco opened the door to leave.
"Malfoy?"
"Yes sir?"
"Go to class, please."
Draco's eyes fell to the ground as he stumbled out of the room. Clearly drunk. Etta lifted her illusion once he was gone.
"You did that on purpose. Inviting him here while you knew I was here? You're trying to make me feel bad" She crossed her arms.
"I just needed you to see. Hes not okay, Vylette. He needs you. Shall I invite Mr. Berkshire, Mr. Zabini, Mrs. Lovegood or perhaps Mrs. Atwood? Because they are the same as well. They're depressed in your somber absence. Return to them, for their sake."
They sat in silence for what felt like hours.
"Fine, I'll go back."
