September 1, 1991

Valerie's breath quickened as the green-eyed boy tentatively walked up to the Sorting Hat.

"Wicked. Harry Potter at Hogwarts!" Angelica admired as she craned her neck to get a better view of the boy who lived.

Thoughts came tumbling into Valerie like a train. Harry Potter. Harry. The closest thing she ever had to a brother.

Harry Potter. Harry.

He reminded Valerie so much of James. His messy, jet black hair, the glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. But one thing was different: his eyes. They screamed Lily Evans, bright green and determined.

Valerie always wondered what Harry got up to after the fall of the most dangerous Dark Wizard to ever exist. Did he miss his mum and dad? Did he miss Remus and Valerie and Sirius? Or did all the memories and happiness they ever brought him vanish when he was marked with that infamous lightning-shaped scar? If she were to go up to Harry right now, would he even recognize her?

No. Valerie answered for herself. How could he? Why would he? He is Harry Potter. Every word, memory and laugh that was shared between them, was long forgotten.

Harry. Harry. Har-

Cheers erupted from the Gryffindor table, knocking Valerie back into her senses.

Harry smiled so wide, he had dimples like no other. It hurt Valerie deep down in her to see that smile. That sense of pure happiness radiating from him. It hurt her to know that the boy he used to be, the one without fame and a scar on his forehead, was gone. The boy no one could spend time without, the boy who was loved so much, just for being himself, was left behind in Godric's Hollow, on October 31, 1981.

He stood up from the stool and ran over to the source of all the ruckus, where he was trampled in loud greetings and smiles.

"Dammit, imagine how cool it would've been to have Harry Potter in Ravenclaw." Angelica said, peering over at Harry who was shaking hands with Oliver at the Gryffindor table. "Right?" She added after Valerie continued to stare at that same table, her sadness crystal clear in her golden-brown eyes. "Are you alright?" Angelica asked sounding concerned.

Valerie blinked multiple times, trying to retract the tears welling her eyes. When she spoke her voice was hoarse, "I-I'm... Harry."

Angelica tilted her head to the side in confusion before the pieces of the puzzle clicked into place in her mind and she grabbed Valerie's hand in hers. Valerie's eyes flickered from Harry to her hand in Angelica's, then back to Harry. Her eyes made her way back to Angelica, reluctantly and she was met with her caring and fierce blue eyes.

"It's a stupid thing to ask, but are you alright?" Angelica repeated.

The only answer that came to Valerie's mind was, no. But how could she be alright? She never would have expected Harry to come to Hogwarts. The only thing she knew about the new Harry was that he lived with his Aunt and Uncle. That's it.

That's all her father would let her know. She knew he knew more that he wasn't telling her, but she never pressed that subject. The pain of losing the people he was ever able to call his family to the welcoming arms of Death was too much. The pain of knowing one of the people he trusted so much would betray his best friend was too much. It was all too much for Valerie to pester Remus about.
