Nat and I had been dating for almost 5 months when Steve introduced me to a man named Sam. They had met a year before I moved into the tower.
"Fury wants to send you on a mission." Steve informed me and I frowned. "I ain't an avenger." I protested. "Doesn't seem like he cares. He ordered you go on a mission with Sam and I." Steve shrugged.
"When?" I asked. "Friday." Steve answered. "But that's Nat's birthday." I said and he nodded. "I told him but he said Natasha wouldn't mind." Steve explained.
"Alright." I sighed. I left the room and made my way to Natasha's and I's bedroom. We started sleeping in the same bed about a month after we started dating.
"Nat?" I called as I stepped into the room. She walked out of the bathroom in an oversized shirt and her panties. "Yes, sugar?" she asked as I sat on the bed.
"Fury is sending me on a mission this Friday with Steve and Sam." I told her. "Doesn't he know it's my birthday?" she asked as she sat down next to me and put her hand on my thigh.
"He does know it's your birthday, he just doesn't care." I answered angrily. She caressed my cheek with her thumb. "Hey, it's okay. We can celebrate whenever." she assured.
"I know. It's just... it's the first birthday of one of us we celebrate as a couple." I said and looked into her green orbs. "Don't worry, darling. We are going to celebrate once you're back safe and sound." she answered and kissed my temple.
I sighed but nodded. A few days later I said goodbye to her with a kiss before I entered the quinjet. "So, where are we headed?" I asked no one in particular.
"A Hydra base in Germany. We think the guy who shot Natasha could be there.", Steve explained. "Why isn't Nat here then?", I asked confused.
"We don't think she should be involved in something like this considering how personal this is.", a voice behind me said. I turned around and looked into Nick Fury's eyes.
"So why am I here then? I'm her girlfriend. Isn't this personal too?", I asked him. "You weren't involved in what happened. Plus I want to know how you deal with something like this when a person you love is involved." he explained.
My cheeks turned a bright red. "I don't love Natasha." I said. "Oh? Then why are you dating her? You've been together for months now and if you're still in love with her as much as you were on the day you started dating, then you love her." Nick chimed in.
I looked down before walking away from him and sitting down in the back of the quinjet. "Are you okay?" Steve asked as he sat down next to me.
"Yeah. Just thinking about what Fury said." I answered. "The part about you loving Natasha?", he asked. "Yes. Do I really love her?" I asked.
I didn't know if I was asking him or myself. "Well, love is complicated. It's the best emotion you can feel, yet it can break your heart within seconds. I don't think you'd still be dating Nat if you didn't love her." Steve said and smiled.
I returned the smile and laid my head against the wall, closing my eyes. "The flight will take some time, so rest a bit." Steve suggested before leaving.
